using 3G wifi abroad

Hi There,
I am soon to buy a 3G Huawei E5331 Mifi and 3g, 3 gigabyte data sim so I can have wifi on my tablet wherever I am ( within the 3G coverarge of course)

My question is. Can I use the 3G sim setup whilst abroad instead of searching for a wifi hotspot in whatever country i'm in? I tend to island hop a lot so I'm not in one place for more than a day or so. I think a data sim for each country would be a waste as I would'nt use it all

any advice would be gratefully received

It's either 3G or wi-fi, not both. If you use 3G abroad on a UK SIM then you will incur huge data roaming charges. If you use free local wi-fi hotspots then you pay nothing.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Ah, that explains a lot thank you Macman

Island hop in different countries? What kind of...?

Why not just state where you are going, instead of being vague?
  • Sorry, I do a lot of cruises e.g a Mediterranean cruise would take in France, Spain, Italy, Cyprus

Would I need a sim card for each country?

On a ship, unless you sail reasonably close to shore all the way, you will have no 3G signal at all.

Do you have a smart phone already, and what mobile provider are you with as you may find they do packs for Europe that whilst are not cheap, solve the problem of roaming.

Otherwise you will find it either will not work, or you will incur truly magestical costs using the dongle abroad.

To by pass that, free wifi (be careful it'll not be secure) or buying a sim card in every country you visit.

I use vodafone on contract, and took advantage of their (kinda dear, but liveable) charge to take my package overseas (Europe) Tethered to a tablet, solved my problems.

However on a cruise ship I would imagine you would have wifi either free, or a paid version available. But does not solve net access off ship.

Doesn't the ship have wifi access? Considering you are going on a holiday, then whatever rubbish is on facebook etc, can wait until your return?
Enjoy the holiday and the sight seeing
  • its more catching up on emails from the kids etc. Shipboard wifi is MEGA expensive. I think i will wait til I go ashore then find an internet cafe or hotspot.

    Thanks for you help guys
