It's about perspective, I wonder if your GP would be equally appalled to learn that oral cold sores are spread by people kissing other people, on the mouth no less (and to any reader wanting to expand on that - I require no further clarification or detail on cold sores
!) and are much easier and likely to be passed on than diseases caused by dogs licking faces.
My dog doesn't lick faces because I don't like it. If another dog goes to jump up and lick my face then I move away or turn around because I don't like it. The chances of getting any kind of infection from it is low, I don't like it because the thought of it turns my stomach not because my revulsion is a true and accurate response to the risk factor of getting any kind of skin disease.
When I was younger my mum's dog jumped up and licked my face and actually licked my open mouth, yes, I have snogged a dog - I have had no ill effects from that except it makes me queasy when I think about it. There is a small chance I might have become ill (or that the dog might have become ill) but my reaction to it then (and now 25 odd years later) is much more over the top than the incident actually merited.
None the less I don't care, because I really don't like dogs licking faces but at least I admit that is because of my psychology rather than the dog's physiology.0 -
Haven't read the entire thread, but dogs lick and I've never heard of a way to stop them licking people. I think if you don't like it, then a dog perhaps isn't the pet for you.marlasinger0

Not all dogs are licky.
I've lived with two and neither of them were, thank goodness, as I think it's gross too. An occasional polite hello lick is different from something that wants to slurp all over you all the time, which this sounds like. I think it is down to training. Our dogs weren't allowed to be slurpers or nuisances and it didn't seem to do them any major psychological harm.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

My rescue collie's a licker. We just let her get on with it and wash hands afterwards.
Weirdly - it's arms she seems to like!
Good luck OP - it sounds like you have a lovely friendly dog, maybe both you and the pup have some adapting to do

Ive never liked dogs licking, I think its awful, dont get me wrong hes got a lot better as hes grown but its driving me insane.
I think you'll struggle. My dog doesn't lick me, like you I do not like it, but with kids having sticky fingers and being at the perfect height, I can't see how you will stop it. The kids will grow out of it before your dog does, I suspect
On a note designed to turn your stomach, a couple of months ago my best friend came over with her two yorkies, to play with my small pooch. At one point I offered her a Maxim or similar and we both enjoyed our ice creams. I was astounded when she turned to the adoring dogs (adoring of ice cream I suspect) offered her ice cream for a lick to all the dogs then put it back in her mouth. I was gobsmacked, horrified but also hysterically amused. She then offered it out again in turn for a lick but rebuked my dog for trying to have a sneaky bite, on the basis that she'd only offered a lick not a bite....I think it will stay in my mind for ever.....0
