If you are worming your dog, keeping his inoculations up to date and teaching your children to wash their hands before eating and after playing with the dog, then you really don't have any worries

To be honest every time you take your kid to a play park, you are exposing them to any old flea bitten dog , fox or cat that's had a pee.

Just teach the kids to wash their hands and not to eat their own bogeys and they will be grand

Regardless of this, I do not want the dog licking, the kids dont like it, I dont like it. Are you seriously telling me your happy to let a dog lick you when it spends a good part of the day licking its behind, its lipstick and eating the nextdoor neighhbours deposits from the garden.

Unfortunately teaching my son is about as easy as teaching the dog anything, when it comes to hands in mouths and bogeys.

I'm no expert on kids or dogs but wouldn't it be better to discourage the kids putting hands in mouths all the time?

They're probably licking off far worse germs while they're elsewhere.

Still not helping my current issue is it, the dog will still be licking hands, feet and faces, when none of us like it.

Perhaps getting a dog wasn't really a good idea

This is why so many breeders and shelters refuse to home where there are children under 10.

Dogs lick, its what they do, like humans hug and kiss, of course, this also spreads germs....

I completely agree, it wasnt a good idea, im honestly not a pet person, but my husband and children love the dog to bits therefore im hoping he grows out of it.

Ive never liked dogs licking, I think its awful, dont get me wrong hes got a lot better as hes grown but its driving me insane.

Bit of hot mustard on the kids fingers, after a few " hot licks" the dog will soon learn its a bad idea , its called classical conditioning and was the object of the famous " pavlovs dogs" experiment

Dogs don't have the same extent of tastebuds that humans do, so its very unlikely to work.

No, humans don't lick or eat the things dogs do, but you knew about this aspect of canine behaviour yet still chose to introduce a dog intonyour young family and expect the dog to alter its ingrained behaviour.

How about reducing the attraction of the childs fingers by not allowing them to eat with their fingers and keeping the dog under control while the children are eating.

If the kids really don't like it (to be honest, it sounds
to me as though it's you who don't like it and are optimistically projecting your dislike onto your kids :) ) - you can teach them the "be a tree" technique - fold arms, turn away from dog and stand still when he does the unwanted behaviour, basically be as boring and non-interactive as possible. Combine this with a click and treat, or whatever positive reinforcement you use in your training (and if you personally don't do any training with him, you need to start if you want him to listen to you - you need to be a source of good things and fun), when he does what you want - i.e. turn away or walk away from the child.

To be honest though, if your children are like mine (mine are very slightly younger at 4 and 2), if they love the dog, they will resent being asked to not interact, and will undermine you at every turn! My 2 year old does "bite for me, bite for the dog" when she's trying to wind me up - I have to say it's a testament to my dog's fabulous character that she won't take things from people at the table and lies at the other end of the kitchen at mealtimes, but it's not easy.

In many cases, only because they can't reach :rotfl:
