Question about taxing my car

Options
I bought a car yesterday which has no tax on it, usually I buy my tax online but obviously DVLA wont have my details on the car yet so if I was to do that they would send the tax to the previous owners address so I have to do it at the post office.
I've changed my insurance over and its one of the companies who do everything online and by email but when Ive gone to print out my certificate of insurance it has the reg for my first car on it (I'm now on the 3rd car with this policy).

My question is, can I use this certificate along with emails from my insurer that confirm the change of vehicle and have the same policy number on or will I need to contact my insurer and ask them to change it? (Sorry if this seems a silly question but when it comes to cars you could write what I know on the back of a stamp lol)

You'll need to get it changed. The Post Office are only supposed to accept a certificate that specifically "names" the car concerned. Emails etc aren't acceptable to them.

If the car is now showing as insured on the MID then you should be able to get tax at your local DVLA office if it's still open but the post Office has no facility to check that.

You need to make sure the details match. If the insurance company don't put the right details on the certificate you won't be able to tax the car and if it did have tax you might well get stopped by the police for no insurance as chances are the car wouldn't show up on the database as being covered.

If you've paid an admin fee already, call them up, get them to change it and complain it was sloppy from their side. You never know, they might refund the fee as they didn't do the job right.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Think I will have to phone and have a moan as when I changed the insurance over on my last car I was pulled by police 2 weeks later as they said I was showing no insurance but I gave them my insurance company details and they checked it out and let me go. I also taxed my last car online so had no reason to look at my certificate.
But now I need it I see it still has my first car on it so they never put my second car on it.

    Thank you

  • Does the system not yet exist where insurance docs aren't required when obtaining a ved disc? Soon, the requirement of displaying a ved disc will be phased out
  • Have you checked the current car on askmid for insurance?

Definitely got grounds for a complaint then. That's exactly the situation I was hoping you'd avoid. Fine they confessed it was their fault but if you'd been in an accident it could have been very difficult sorting it out.

    Enjoy the new motor!

  • They sent an email saying it can take up to 24 hours for all documents to update which it hasn't quite been yet, so I'll wait till that's up and check. If still not updated I'll be moaning and point out they never changed it last time.
