forget paypal. i don't use paypal on ebay. i still make a living. just use chqs, postal orders, bank transfers, nochex & google checkout - plenty of options for buyers to pay with.

Also, there are not many sellers who can afford not to have paypal, unfortunately in my categories anyway. I would probably lose 75% of my sales by not offering paypal. ( not that I am having many sales right now!).

you'd be suprised how many you actually lose. certainly isn't 75% worth when i compare my sales vs others selling what i sell. the savings in paypal fees can be used to undercut your competitors...

I did try not offering paypal on some expensive £100+ items, it didn't work, even though I offer direct payment by credit card by phone.
buyers are so brainwashed into thinking paypal is the only safe option, even when credit cards give superior protection.
paypal fees are actually a lot less than ebay fees.
on a £40 sale the ebay fees were, £1.65 listing fee and £1.47 fvf, the paypal fee was £1.52, I think. a total of £4.59!!!
on my website, or off ebay, the same sale would cost me less than £1.00 in merchant fees!
I couldn't undercut my competitors any more than I already do, some of them offer free postage, I don't know how they do it.
I even tried offering free postage on dearer items, it didn't alter my sales one bit.

funny you mention the free postage thing - the best sales i have ever had over a 10 day period was just recently when ebay ran a cheap listing day provided free postage was offered - my margins were hit but sometimes these things are worth doing to increase your customer base. additionally, i only offered chq/postal orders or bank transfer as payment methods, thus saved on credit card processing fees.

but what do you expect? paypal and ebay are the same company...... ofcourse they are going to say that......

What i do not like about paypal, is ALL your credit card details, password, username, address, etc... is availible to any of the staff - even call centre staff...... (confirmed by staff on the phone)
Never do things tomorow when you can do them today.

brainwashed being a very key word - where else on the mainstream www is paypal offered as a payment option? nowhere. yet buyers are happy to proceed with payments made by other credit card processing companies....

its not just paypal...most call centre staff have access to personal details, whether its a bank, or your mobile phone company etc....
