Sky remote replacement - what to be aware of?

My sky plus remote has stopped working. I've changed the batteries but that hasn't resolved it. I've seen some secondhand ones on amazon. What do I need to be aware of before I buy one? I think I had it in 2008 or 2009 and Its the light grey Sky plus box so is there a particular version I must buy? TIA.

Are you sure it's not working at all? You may have accidentally switched it into a different mode that is not compatible with your Sky box. Is the light flashing when you press the buttons or is it completely dead? You can also try pointing it at the camera lens on your phone (or any digital camera) and you should be able to see whether the transmitter is flashing or not by watching the screen of the phone (if you see what I mean).

If you think it might be still alive but in the wrong mode, try following these instructions:
For most remotes Version 4 and later (white label inside battery cover)
    1 Press "TV"
2 Press and hold "Select" and "Yellow" together until red led in remote end flashes twice (On HD remotes "Select" and "i" together) - if it doesn't flash twice then remote cannot be reprogrammed (clone or too old)
3 Press "0" to operate standard box, "1" for Sky+ and on HD remotes "2" for HD - remotes in Sky+ mode will normally control HD boxes as well
4 Press "Select" - red led should flash twice
5 Press "Sky" and away you go

Any remote in Sky+ mode will also operate HD boxes BUT this can be stopped in some remote and box combinations in the following way (it certainly works on Amstrad DRX890) boxes but NOT Thomson HD boxes)
    1 Press "TV"
2 Press and hold "Select" and "Blue" together until red led in remote end flashes twice - if it doesn't flash twice then remote cannot be reprogrammed (clone or too old)
    3 Press "1"- There are 4 different modes here 0, 1, 2, 3
4 Press "Select" - red led should flash twice
5 Press "Sky" and away you go

In above to return remote to operating both in step 3 press "0"

If you're sure you need a new one, any currently sold remote should work as they are highly intercompatible - just make sure it's got all the Sky+ buttons that you'll need and bear in mind you might need to follow the above instructions to switch it to the right mode if it doesn't seem to work when it arrives (although if it's a Sky+ remote it's highly unlikely to be set to the wrong mode, so you probably won't have any trouble).

If you want it to control your TV's volume then you'll need to know the code which you can look up at http://sky.uebv.com/ . For the best compatibility make sure you get a GENUINE Sky Rev 9 remote, especially if you're planning on a new TV soon or have a more 'obscure' make like the e-Motion ones sold in Sainsbury's ;)

    Hope this helps!
  • Yes that might help. I'll give it a try as I remember having to do that kind of thing when I bought a new tv and wanted to get the volume thru the remote etc. thnx a lot

It would be nice if when people infringed copyright of other forums (by copying and pasting from them) that they at least achnowledged the source and original poster - in this case my post from AV Forums.:mad:

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi,

you could take it apart and clean the circuit board and rubber with alcohol and cotton buds.

    Look.

I wasn't aware that the instructions on how to programme a Sky remote was copyrighted by you?
Pretty sure you've just re-written instructions which would be copyright of the remote manufacturer. Did your post at AV forums properly acknowledge the source of your information? I doubt it.
