Personally, I don't think I have heard such a snobby post in all my time on here. Get a grip.

Obviously not been on here very long

I also wouldn't want a kiddie day care opening up next door to me, ESP if I was a shift worker. I'm no snob, just value my private home time
  • whatever you decide to do, I'd at least speak to her first about your concerns, at the very least then you've tried the 'nice' approach and she may* actually listen.

I doubt anyone would if potentially there could be 24 extra vehicle movements past the house every day. That's a serious increase in traffic in a cul de sac.

You are not being a snob, you're being concerned and quite right too, I wouldn't want that next door either but there's not a lot you can do apart from chase up all the relevant folk to ensure it's above board and keep your fingers crossed that it's not as bad as you imagine, you may have to invest in ear plugs!

Assuming that this lady actually has all the proper approvals to start running a childminding business from her home, I don't think you can stop her. However, I think you have legitimate concerns regarding the parking arrangements, and the rear garden fence.

The nursery my daughter attends is on a regular residential street and they have had to post a member of staff outside at drop-off and collection time just to prevent idiot parents from blocking the neighbouring driveways. They have said that they could, in theory, be shut down if the neighbours repeatedly complain about inconsiderate parking.

Regarding the rear fence - I think you need to suggest to your neighbour that they install a full 6ft fence around their garden. This would be partly for safety issues (because I wouldn't put it past a boistrous child to be able to vault over a 3ft fence) and partly to protect the privacy of her neighbours. This should also be done at her own cost.

Im thinking in terms of sitting in the garden with a book during the nice days and having 8+ children screaming and shouting less than 3 yards away with nothing but a 3foot picket fence for privacy.

Would the parents be happy for you to be seen in your skimpy bikini by their kids?

Who's going to fetch the toys etc that come over to your side?

I'm sure you will see plenty of them with such a small fence.

I wouldn't be happy about this too, my next door neighbour has her 3 grandkids dropped off at 0630 in the morning and the screaming 8 month old wakes me and drives me nuts.

I have no bother that they are noisy in the day but it annoys me that i loose sleep. We also have a fence the same height as yours and next door spend alot of their time in the garden during the summer and we feel that the noise is intrusive from the kids and up to 6 adults. (They do not have louud music etc and try to be considerate, they are just "living").

We used to live next door to a child minder. The kids being dropped off/picked up wasn't really an issue, but the kids being in the garden and playing on the trampoline after school could be annoying. I'd get home from work and go out to do a bit of weeding or feed the fish and there'd be a row of faces poking over the fence demanding to know "What you doing?" We were also constantly chucking balls and toys back over the fence. I know they aren't big issues, but it did put me off using and enjoying our garden.

I thought the school holidays would be bad, but like a previous poster has said, the child minder usually took the kids out for the day.

If I were the OP I'd be more concerned if my husband glanced out of the bedroom window in the direction of the children in the garden and someone shouted "Oy, what are you doing?"

Maybe she won't be minding all the children at the same time ? Maybe it will be different children on different days ?
