Switching supplier with overdue bill
Options
Hi i am with Eon and my current overdue bill is £348
I am entering a debt relief order and have included this in the order, witch will be in effect within 2 weeks when i pay the £90 fee.
My question is "If i transfer my utilities to British Gas, will my current debt with Eon be transferred with it or will this remain with Eon".
I don't want to switch supplier if the debt is going to follow for obvious reasons".
I would like to go from Eon to British Gas on their "Price promise July 2014 with free EnergySmart meter"

You can't transfer debt or credit on an energy account. You are expected to clear the debt when you close the account, ot if in credit you get a payment back.
If the arrears is over £200 then Eon will probably block the switch anyway. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
As above - you can't switch if you have an outstanding debt. You will have to pay the £348 before switching suppliers.0

thanks for the reply macman.
I know i read that somewhere, but what i can't understand is this, citizens advice told me to stop paying Eon as i am including it in a debt relief order, witch will be in force in about 2 weeks, will i have to wait until this is the case before i can transfer or can i just not ever transfer at all as that debt will be wiped off after 12 months along with the rest of my debts if you know what i mean0 -
if you get the DRO then you may well fail credit checks any new supplier may carry out
has the dro been accepted by the IP?0 -

I understand that i may fail and not be accepted but I'm just worried that if i stay with Eon they may force me to have prepayment meters installed, witch i don't really want, as why i want to switch. I can also get cheaper deal with a different company.
as for the DRO ive filled in the app with the intermediary at citizens advice, i just need to pay the £90 app fee witch i will do on 04/03/2013 and the guy will then submit my application to the official receiver, i will find out if I'm accepted within 24hr from when he sends the online application. so i don't know0 -
It would probably be best not to include your EON debt in the DRO and then accept a prepayment meter from EON to claw back the debt.
You will not be able to switch in your current situation and adding the debt to the DRO will only complicate things for you.
If you cannot switch you should try to keep things 'sweet' with EON.
Ring EON and request a prepayment meter before they take action to fit one, face up to at least one of your debts, it sounds as if you are just running away from everything to clear the decks.
I think you are being bit over optimistic about the timescale for avoiding your debtors.0 -
Even if you can switch suppliers you will fail their debt check so they may impose conditions on you.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Once you are on a DRO you will presumably fail the credit checks anyway, so a PM may be inevitable.
Given that you can't mange your account on a credit meter, would a PPM not be a better way forward? One less potential source of new debt to worry about. The cost is the same as standard tariff. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Why not get a better deal than the BG Price promise July 2014, if you are having financial problems there are much cheaper fixed rate tarioff available in the market than the BG one, Scottish Power Online Fixed Price Energy September 2014 for one and no termination fees on that deal, whereas the BG one is expensive now and if you want to switch before end of tariff you'll find BG will whack you with a hefty cancellation charge.0

I know it's one less debt to worry about but once i have got the dro in place, i will have more money to be able to then afford such bills as my gas, electric, water and food. witch i was not able to do with all these minimum payments totaling to more than what i receive.0
