Thanks will get thwem to double check this when they strip motor, currently i think they have just tested motor is getting a supply and because it is, have said it needs replaced. 7-10 days for new part, so will have them inspect internals in meantime and sell on if this is the case0

No harm in asking for some goodwill here, you won't find Toyota standards of customer care or product responsibilty so don't hold your breath, but make 'em sweat a bit by mentioning you'll be asking HonestJohn etc if this is normal or acceptable when they've diagnosed the problem.0

lUM,
I WOULD SAY YES TO YOUR QUESTION, DRIVE TO WORK 5 MILES THERE AND BACK, BUT GETS A GOOD 80 MILE RUN MAYBE ONCE A WEEK
This is why low mileage cars are not always a good idea. Now we know your journey types its easy to see why a starter motor and alternator failed so soon.
5 days a week 48 weeks a year? 480 engine starts yet only covering 2400 miles. Thats hard work for the starter motor and alternator.
Compare that to someone that does 40 miles a day (20 each way).
Same 480 engine starts 9,600 a year
This is why i prefer a well looked after but high mileage car. The saving i make, Easily covers the cost of any parts i may need.
I dread to think how much wear that engine has compared to something that runs up and down the motorway all day long.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
The weekly 80 mile run will be good for keeping the particulate filter in good condition (if you happen to own or buy a car that has one)
Unfortunately dual mass flywheels don't regenerate and the short stop/start runs wear them faster than the longer runs.0 -

What about vehicles with auto stop/start ? Rather than just two starter activations, one leaving home and one coming back you might have a dozen activations on one journey. This worries me with the VW Blue Motion on my current car I am afraid I switch it off each journey . Seems you save a thimble full of fuel at the expense of a £1K starter motor every few years. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0 -

A bit of googling will show the the problem.
If it is, replacing the starter wont last.
I would do some homework so you have the ammo ready.
got any links because all I can find is hydraulic and release bearing issues.
I thought petrol audi DMF weren't even close to a "known issue", certainly the one on my car is now over 220k and still original, as are the alternator & starter motor0 -

FYI, conventional starter motor & alternator systems isn't used in start/stop vehicles. In fact the only issue you'll likely higher wear on the battery.0 -
I was going to say, you would hope that in a car with stop/start the electrical system, including the alternator and starter, would be beefed up enough to deal with this.
Or maybe it's another thing to go wrong after 6 years use forcing you to buy a new car.
Only time will tell.0 -
Any evidence of this? Plus fuel savings can be 10% or more, hardly a "thimble full".

How much fuel do you think your car uses at tickover at the lights ? 10% of your total consumption ? dream on buddy.
Medium modern diesel will typically use 0.9 lit / hour on tickover, that is 45 ml for a three minuite wait at the lghts, less than a single optic shot of whisky in the pub and we all know how small that amount is, hardly wets the bottom of the glass! You scullion!
