Audi highly unusual failure!!!
Options
Help,
This week my 2008 Audi S5 starter motor has completely failed with only 46,000 miles on the clock. Last year the Alternator failed at 40,000 miles. For both jobs Audi have quoted nearly £900. I know these are parts that may fail but the master tech at Audi stated there had never been an alternator fail on an S5 at anywhere near the mileage of my car. I paid that bill last year and now the starter motor, again this is an extremely unusual fault with a car of so low mileage. I know the car is out of warranty but wanted to know if Audi should be showing some good will on this given the circumstances. Ive got a mondeo with a 112,000 miles and no such problems. It seems unnaceptable to me that a car of this price should have 2 vital component failures such as this. Any thoughts?
thanks

Have they checked the flywheel ?Be happy...;)0

Well, tech just stated starter motor failure, havnt checked flywheel.0

Starter needs stripping to see if it has magnetic particles inside from the flywheel or starter ring assembly otherwise the new one could follow it.
The main dealer should have already thought of this.Be happy...;)0 -
WILL PUT THIS TO THEM ON MONDAY TO ENSURE THEY HAVE. tHANKS
I WONDERD IF THEY SHOULD BE GIVING GOOD WILL ON IT THO?0 -

The main dealer should have already thought of this.
Are you thinking DMF failure? If it is that then I'd be tempted to replace the starter and then sell the car.
Is this car used mostly for short trips around town by any chance?0 -
This is a known issue on the S5, hence why the dealer might be playing it down, the flywheel fails shreds particles and they get magnetised in to the starter, eventually the whole clutch and flywheel fails.
A bit of googling will show the the problem.
If it is, replacing the starter wont last.
I would do some homework so you have the ammo ready.Be happy...;)0 -
Ive had a look on all the forums and couldnt see anything to suggest this is a known prob? News to me and now worried, any ideas where i could get this info??
Cheers0 -
So basically if you can't get Audi to fix it as an inherent fault, then replace the starter and sell it?0

lUM,
I WOULD SAY YES TO YOUR QUESTION, DRIVE TO WORK 5 MILES THERE AND BACK, BUT GETS A GOOD 80 MILE RUN MAYBE ONCE A WEEK0 -
Search under s5 clutch problems.
The starter is an early indication of what lies ahead.
However, this would be evident if the starter was stripped down, which is a bread and butter diagnostic procedure to find the cause of failure.
Just bolting a new starter on is the work of a fast fit technician.
If it is stripped and chips are found (magnetic particles) then as said above unless you have huge pockets, get a new starter on and get rid.Be happy...;)0
