Thermals, which to buy?

Sorry if I have posted in wrong place, move if I have.

I have Raynards a circulation disease and always feel cold.

I have damart thermals and heat generating thermals from M & S, but still feel cold.

Any ideas what's the best?

Sick of being cold and spending half my time in bed with my electric blanket!

  • I buy silk thermals from http://www.patra.com/productlist.asp?CatID=60&BCat=58,60&rootcatid=58 what I really like is that they are very lightweight so they don't make my normal clothes too tight. The silk/cotton mix ones are a little bit more robust than silk alone.

    Hi,

I wear thermals in the winter as I have a temporary outdoor job.

I find layers help a lot, and it is possible to wear lots of layers without looking like the mitchelin man. :D

I start with a thermal vest top, over this you can put a strappy summer vest top. It does look odd but its underneath so it dosn't matter a jot.
I've tried the vest top underneath and it dosn't work as well, you do need the thermals next to you.

After that you can add a t shirt and a thin long sleeved top. As I work outside I then add a body warmer. I go a fitted one from Debenhams, rather than a padded one which means I can still work without feeling restricted.

Tights under trousers help alot as well.

Or knee highs/ankle highs under socks.

I don't buy damart thermals. Mine are from either M&S or BHS

I have some from Blacks, I think if you try the 'outdoor' type shops they may be more effective as they are specifically designed for cold temperatures, good luck I really feel for you, I hate the cold so can't begin to imagine what it must be like with your condition

def agree with the outdoor shops, u might pay a bit more but def worth it.

I also agree with the light layers - I took DD to Lapland b4 xmas - we were out in minus 35 - layered light - she had M+S thermals and she was warmer I;d picked up cheap thermals and they were as much use a choc teapot.

  • Almost all my cold-weather under layers are of superfine merino. I prefer natural fabrics if possible and merino adds a lot of warmth with very little bulk, especially if it is layered. I know Icebreaker brand is available pretty much anywhere in the world and it is pricy but good quality and I've had no problem machine washing and tumble drying my Icebreaker garments for years with no ill effects. Other brands may shrink, so approach with caution and ask around.

The one thing I find makes the biggest difference to me, though, is keeping the whole of me covered. If there's a gap in the middle most of the heat seems to be lost! So I like an extra-long top with high-waisted bottoms so there's no cold tummy or back to contend with.
  • I'm a big fan of Damart thermals vests etc.

Which Damart items do you have?Do you know that they have a whole range of thermal underwear ranging in 'warmth factor' from 1 to 5,5 being the warmest.I have mostly ones at 2 and 3 and one at 4,which keeps me toasty warm. The '4' one I sometimes wear on its own in the house without a jumper as it's so warm and it looks like a plain top.

Damart also do thermal insoles to put in shoes, though I'm sure you can get them elsewhere. The insoles make a big difference.

I would also suggest wearing a woollen jumper as well and a pair of knee-length woollen mix socks.I often wear a pair of woollen mix ankle socks over that, especilly if I'm outside.

Silk can also keep you very warm in the winter,so if you have any silk blouses etc,add that as a layer.

    HTH.

  • I prefer natural fibres, I find then that they breathe better and regulate temperature much better than synthetic fibres. I love my silk long johns!

The problem I find is that they aren't long enough (I want the top to come down well over my bum so they tuck into trousers) and the necks aren't high Why would you want a v neck thermal vest? Also the necks aren't high enough at the back. Damart are the worst for this.

I have some from Aldi which are ok, but not long or high enough and most that I've seen don't fit that criteria either. I do have a couple of ski base tops that are polo neck but again, don't come down over the bum.

Layering seems the only way to go, though I end up looking and feeling like Michelin (wo)man!!! So elegant.

I have raynauds and love my aldi thermals. I agree with the advice to tuck the top in as a chilly area above the waist freezes my core really fast :(

I live in my manbi wrist warmers from autumn through spring - they make such a difference for my hands on the PC and doing chores. I wear the S/M adult size. I think they are the best tip.

I would also recommend thermal knee length socks and suggest you consider the insole suggestion above (I've never tried it except in my snow boots and can see it could be great).
