The petition (that you didn't think to include in your post).

    Young Driver Insurance Cap

    Responsible department: Department for Transport
I am a 17 year old male that has recently passed my driving test with very few minors. As I have passed my driving test I want to be on the road gaining experience as soon as possible. The cheapest insurance quote I have received so far is £5000. Essentially depriving young people the invaluable experience needed. I am shouting out to people who feel young drivers insurance deserves a cap for both male and female and therefore allowing young drivers the freedom they deserve after paying so much to enable them to pass their driving test.

Sorry, at 17 you are a high risk and the quotes reflect this. I have decades of claim free driving but am still expected to pay close to £500.

its not my petition, im 19, its someone elses, no point in making another petition,

Im not a boy racer like insurance companies think i will be. Im a safe driver. Charging me 7000 grand for insurance is a rip off and unaffordable

7000 grand = 7,000,000 - you are being charged £7million? what do you drive - a one of a kind Ferrari? :rotfl:
  • To be honest Ii would like to see some hard facts about teenage insurance claims, it is all very well saying they are a bad risk but what proof do we have to back these claims up.
The premiums we have been quoted if we list the car at my sons grandmothers house come down £3k, so that is nothing to do with the driver but the risk of theft. Given advances in car security the chances of having a car stolen have dropt dramaticaly and as someone who drives everyday and at all times of the day it must be months since I last saw an accident.
I believe insurance companies are taking advantage of the situation to fleece the young motorist.

The problem is, that within the young driver age group, there are a lot of 'invincible' drivers, the sort that fly around as if they are untouchable, and when they have a crash, they tend to do it big style, so it tars all young drivers with the same brush.

But, in saying that, where we live we have one of those postcodes, due to a minority of shady characters in the region, our car insurance has rocketed.

So in reality, it's not just young drivers having to pay a lot, it's all of us for one reason or another.

That is ridiculous!! I'm female and last year when I was 19, my insurance was around £500 on a Ford Ka. Even with the new EU gender rules it's still around £500. Have you tried a confused.com quote? Is that the cheapest you're being offered?

Insurers are a business, if an Insurer could see a gap in the market by offering premiums lower for young drivers they would.

The reason the premium is lower at your address is more likely to be for lower overall claims rather than just theft claims.

If your grandson uses your address to get his insurance lower and is caught, he runs the risk of his claim being refused along with his policy being voided. The policy being voided will affect him obtaining reasonable prices for any type of insurance for the rest of his life.

Here is some data from Admiral, obviously the figures only relate to Admirals own customer base.

  • And I thought my insurance was high at 2k a year with 4 yrs NCB, no offences or anything in a 1.2 2002 fiat Punto. I'm 23.

It sounds like your trying sportier cars or sport spec cars. For example, I got my fiat punto ELX and it's 2k a year. I didn't realise the ELX. Was the 'sports' version as its ugly as hell! If I had of gone with a basic fiat Punto it would have been about £900 per year....

Try smaller, uglier cars. No mods. Nothing fancy. Basic!!! Old!!! Not expensive!!

and Im getting £7000 minimum the highest qoute i have seen is for over £20,000
  • Dacouch with respect did you read the post or more importantly did you understand it?. The insurance is cheaper at his grandmothers address, I am well aware that insurance is a business, I am also aware it would be unwise to register the car at his grandmothers home but I still question the validity of a premium of £9.500 to insure a peugeot 206 or £39000 to insure an old 205 run about.
It would only take one company to play fair and then we might get a bit of competition
