Driving Down Price Of Used Car

Options
Hello Money Savers,

Have taken first tentative steps at looking for a new car and have seen a car for around £9k which seems ideal, low insurance group, 70+ mpg and zero road tax. Its a bit of a rare one, Seat Ibiza Estate 1.2 SE Copa.

If its priced at £9k on the forecourt, what sort of discount could I reasonably ask for if I was arriving with cash? The salesman today spun a yarn today that this car was top spec and would have to go for asking price.

:money:Grateful for any tips, but know not to reveal my true budget.

They all do that. They're professional forecourtmen (aka liars). Check the various online valuations, and offer a bit less than that (obviously you will need to know condition, mileage etc). A reasonable starting point is 10% off asking price. But they're tight nowadays. Let them know your budget, if they won't accept it, walk away, give them your number and let them chase you. Paying in cash also helps to get the price down. If the price is higher than what you wanted, ask them to chuck in free stuff like extended warranties, etc.

    Higher than average miles then.

I know car salesmen dont make much on cash deals, they much prefer to offer finance deals on cars so I would not expect much of a reduction with cash payments.

Its not a rare car. COPA is just another model in the range. There are plenty of options. But it maybe not what you want. Several wheel/tyre packages etc.

Parkers tested one and it averaged 50mpg...

If you carry passengers and luggage etc you will find it very underpowered.

I bet my 2L diesel will average a better MPG on a motorway run. But if your 99.9% town work then it will be better. But 80mpg claimed.. Not really.

    2012 cars for less money.

I never paid the asking price for any car in my life and although I never had a seat I wouldnt be paying it for one of those either.

I have no idea what you need or like, But just pointing out that just because it can do 80mpg doesnt mean your going to get anywhere near that.

Ive had my MPG below 30 with short winter journey's, But on a run at 70mpg i can do 60+ MPG.

Car salesmen are there for a reason, To say how brilliant the car your looking at is and how its a great price, Even if its way OTT on the price.

Its a rare model. Because its got an extra lighter socket in the boot. Or the original buyer chose some different wheels to most people.

They are there to part you with as much cash as possible. They wont pay their own bills if they dont.

60 + mpg at 70 mph in a 2 litre Mondeo diesel? Now that is funny:D
