Advice on when to use PAC please

I guess I'm not alone in being confused with the whole PAC and 30 days notice palava.

In short, I'd like some advice on what date to port - to avoid any ERC please :

Current contract with Orange - minimum term ends on 15.3.13

PAC issued by Orange on 19.2.13 - confirmed in writing saying that the 30 days notice started the date the PAC was issued (I thought they were separate entities?)

If I use the PAC on the 15th March when the minimum term ends I assume I'll be charge an ERC as the 30 days notice runs to the 21.3.13. My monthly plan cost is £23.96 so would the ERC be £23.96 * 12/365 and multiplied by the number of days left on the 30 days notice?

But if the current contract runs past the 15th March I assume I'd have to pay another month's line rental?

If I use the PAC on the 20th March, would I get reimbursed for the line rental I would have already paid?

I know the current contract has to be active to be able to use the PAC and it is all about timing. Just trying to do it the most cost efficient way. But tying myself up in knots in the process!

Any help would be gratefully received, thanks :)

  • I would use it with a few days to spare to be on the safe side. So if you PAC expires on 21st Mar, I'd probs ring up about 17th/18th.

You are correct that you will pay until 21st March but it will all depend on when your bill cycle is as to whether you'll get another bill. Do you know what date of every month your bills are produced (i.e. when you get your new mins etc) not when your dd (if you have one) comes out of the bank?

If you can tell me this, I can explain better!
  • Thank you for the reply. Yes, sorry I should have put that in. Bill date is the 10th of the month so next bill date 10.3.13

A normal full bill will be produced on 10/3/13 and the reason is because at that point the system still thinks everything is ongoing - it doesn't recognise that you will be leaving. The easiest thing is to pay that as normal.

Assuming you use your PAC and your number transfers on 18/3/13 (just for eg), you will receive one final bill on 10/4/13. This will be made up of a refund for the line rental you will have been charged in advance for on 15/3/13 but didn't use because you were disconnected.

The bill will prob look a bit like this

LR refund (although not worded quite like that) - 18/3/13 - 10/4/13 (relevant amount)

PAC debit £xx.xx (this should only be pennies if you use if and leave a few days before it expires.

Obviously it may be worded differently but I hope that gives you a good idea!! If they owe you anything, they can refund you straight back into your bank if you leave your DD active. You may need to call after 10/4/13 for them to do it (even though it should be done automatically). Once you receive your refund, you can cancel your DD!

    Hope that makes sense!

Yes, you've been more than helpful and helped clear up my confusion. Much appreciated. Thank you!! :T
  • I've just been looking at the deal through MPD. If I take out a deal with them that offers cashback and port my existing number with my PAC does that then make any claim for cashback null and void? I notice in the small print on their website that cashback can only be claimed on the number you connect or upgrade so I reckon my assumption could be right.

Had my own question answered by MPD via e-mail :

"your cashback claim will still be valid with a PAC number port on a new connection. Our team can even assist with porting your number across."
