Alternate to RM Mail bags?

Options
Any suggestions what I could use instead of the Royal Mail mail bags. I just need 3 or 4 bags to post tshirts and a large bedspread. I don't want to bulk buy the mailing bags. Has anyone seen anything suitable in the pound shop? Would black bin liners be OK? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

Black bin liners are OK if you 'mummify' them with packing tape. There are also thicker ones called 'rubble sacks'.

You can get as few as 10 from some eBay sellers.

Rubble sacks are stronger than bin bags and look ok to send, they're sold in pound shops.

Don't use bin bags. Mailing lables don't stick to them and they are too thin.
  • Buy a roll of brown paper in the pound shop

Don't use bin liners unless you wrap packing tape around them to stop them tearing. The same goes for brown paper unless you are using it to cover cardboard.

Soft items in brown paper tear to easily.

With Royal Mail now charging the same price for items up to 750g I just tend to use small boxes, covered in brown tape for most small items.

There are always plenty of boxes in the supermarkets ... My favourite ones are those which wine bottles come in ... I simply adapt them, to end up with smaller boxes.

When posting tshirts, i've usually purchased a pack of 4/5 mailing bags from wilko for about £1.50 (ish.)

This week i needed to send something a lot bigger so purchased 5 sacks on amazon for a decent price. Free delivery.

I would not recommend wrapping paper. Brown paper is an awful way of wrapping , it is far too fragile, surprisingly heavy and falls off when it gets wet.

  • A recent purchase of mine was a 'new with tags' t-shirt.

Seller took 11 days to post and when it arrived, rather than being packed flat (as you would expect a new t-shirt to be packed...) it arrived looking like a rugby ball.

The seller had screwed it up tight in a carrier bag, taped it up, wrapped again in another carrier bag and taped that up, then wrapped again in a bin bag and taped that up.

To top it all off with a cherry, they posted second class standard instead of the offered first class....So, after winning the auction on the 30th January and paying within 2 minutes of the auction ending, they took 11 days to post, packed very badly and didn't use the service offered. When i messaged them after a week they promised it had been sent out via RM 1st class on the 30th...when it arrived on the 15th fabuary, i saw the postage label was dated 13th Feb, so she lied about everything except the item condition...

A mailing bag or jiffy bag would of been much better packaging and obviously posting out within the 2 days (as stated) would of improved her DSR stars...(she got a 5 for item as discribed and 1's for everything else.)

I know it's slightly O/T, but it does relate to poor packaging...
