Texts from Barcley's Bank from number 85001? Real or scam?

A google for 'short code text 85001' brings ap a MSE thread from 2008 where the poster suspected it had come from Strongbow but there's no real resolution to the thread.
I would also suspect it's just a phishing expedition.0 -
. . . most likely to verify the number is active. You reply and they sell your number on as a "live" one and then you start receiving sales calls.
I can get a free Asda sim, which gives 25p credit to initiate it. Then I could text back once (foc) to show it is "live" and they can then deluge it to their hearts content with sales calls and texts, I'm never gonna be on it.
"Good game, good game, let's have a look at the scores . . ."
.The bankers stole my pension (and everyone else's). It should have earned a lot of money, but they took their bonus pot first.0 -
Hi Everyone, my name is Tim Snaith and I am the Chief Research Officer at OnePoint Global. Our business is a mobile research platform that is used by Banks, FMCG, Restaurants, Supermarkets, Research Agencies etc. to conduct mobile surveys with customers. The 85001 Short code that you all mention is a FREE text Short Code across all operators and contracts in the UK. If messages flash up on your phone about charges, this is a generic warning against premium charged short codes. This is not the case with 85001 which is FREE and an authentic service that we only allow for permission based research. If you have any questions please contact me directly through our website.
Best wishes

Hi Tim, thank you for clarifying this. I have found a couple of texts to 85001 on my mobile phone bill, which were marked as 'premium number' but not charged for. After your explanation I remembered that I answered some text survey after I had contacted my operator's customer service. So it all makes sense now, thank you for taking time to explain it.
