Texts from Barcley's Bank from number 85001? Real or scam?

Options
I hope that this is in the correct forum, but I wasn't sure were best to post it...

I received two texts supposedly from Barclay's Bank last night from the number 85001. Could anyone confirm if texts from this number are a scam or legitimate?

The texts said thanks for getting in contact with Barclay's Bank and asked how would I rate their Barclaycard service. However I have never contacted them, don't have any account with them and am currently living abroad (originally from the UK, and the text was to my UK number).

I am therefore worried that either the text is a scam of some sort, or that it is real and someone is trying to open a fraudulent account under my name while I am not in the country.

Has anyone experienced something similar to this?
Thanks in advance!

Best to check your credit report with Experian & Equifax.....so that you are sure that no Fraud has been committed...

I didn't think of that, thank you I shall check it out...
  • More likely someone has simply used your mobile number (or mis-entered theirs) when filling in a form.

If someone was going to take out credit in your name, why would they give your real mobile number with it?

It'll just be a mistake - just ignore it.

Thanks for the advice everyone - it does make sense that a fraudster wouldn't use my phone number if trying that kind of scam, so hopefully as you say, it was just an error on someone's part. I think I will get a credit check done just to be safe though...

It's not a 'check' that you need. You want to see your files to see if there are some recent credit searches recorded.
  • Surely if anything a phishing exercise.
You reply and they try to get information from you - if you ignore no damage done.
  • I would say its a phishing text also, most likely to verify the number is active. You reply and they sell your number on as a "live" one and then you start receiving sales calls.
    Bad luck breeds bad luck.

    Damn I'm doomed.
