I finished my studies in 2010 and started my first ever job that year. I see now from my payslips that i was paying tax from the beginning to end, is it possible to claim back that tax now, some 2-3 years later or not? MSE websites article on tax codes is making me wonder whether i have overpaid now. Maybe i've misunderstood the whole thing but if i am correct how do i go about this as HRMC website is very confusing. What forms would i need to fill out what information would i need to provide and where do i send/post this to.

At my new job we have new uniforms (past two months) with a company logo i've been there approximate 9 months now am i allowed to claim for washing these immediately or would i have to wait?

If i don't ask i'll never know so thanks in advance

Happy Birthday MSE :)

What was your total taxable gross for the year and what was your total tax paid for the year?
  • You can still claim a repayment for 2010. You should either write to HMRC or phone them and confirm your employment history and income details and they will check if you are due a repayment.

The same applies to your uniform. Confirm to HMRC what you wear, that it is logo'd, when it started and that your employer does not supply any laundry facilities or pay for your uniform cleaning if this is the case.

    Hi

Finally found my P60 and P45 from my first job, so i've still not claimed a tax rebate as i've not written to HMRC yet. I've never claimed tax back before so a complete newbie. I'm sure there are dedicated threads on the forum but it all seems to elude me and HMRC website seems a maze of strange terminology. I tried to ring them today but was put through to an answering machine twice and cut off, so i'm guessing a letter is the way to go.

Is the link below the address i need to post my letter to?
    http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kb5/hmrc/contactus/view.page?record=hpkspulskxM

I have found this template letter online is there anything else i would have to include in the letter? Do i have to send the original P60 or P45 or both or can i send phontocopies or can i just write the details in these documents in the letter without P60/P45 originals or copies as shouldn't the HMRC hold copies of these anyway? Also is it best to send letters to HMRC by recorded or tracked delivery or does that not matter?

    The Liverpool address is fine.

The template letter doesn’t really seem to include all the required details so if you want to use it you should adapt it to include the details shown on the .gov.uk site.

In theory HMRC should already have your P60 details for all years but if they haven’t then only the originals will be acceptable for repayment security purposes.

You can claim for uniform washing now and if you are writing a letter about your repayment you may as well add the uniform issue into the letter.

If you can phone at 8.00am (or very shortly after) there seems to be a much better chance of getting through and that would be your best bet because HMRC will then tell you whether they need your P60 or anything else in writing or that they can deal with both issues over the phone.

Reclaiming tax on washing uniforms isn't a great deal but still worth claiming.

Last years amount was the Tax on £60 so a rebate of £12. For this year
your tax code will be amended to take the amount into the taxable salary. So small you wont notice it much over 12 months.

Like I say, not a lot but better if your pocket than theirs.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    Thank you

I did call at 8am and got straight through about two weeks ago, explained my situation concerning the year 2010-2011, and told i was due a refund :j. I received a letter today r800 tax calculation stating repayment due. It says they should send another letter in a fortnight. So how can i check that their calculation is right? I still have not applied about uniform tax yet though but i'm guessing its best to apply for that in writing?

    Thanks

    Hi

Actually on closer examination it seems that they've missed out the only year i asked about.Maybe a letter would have been better, but who knows it may have worked itself out the same way.
