If the price is OK with you, agree to it on the condition that he brings cash & goes to the bank with you to pay in - test drive for the car. That way you are all clear.

Exactly what I've done several times, for both cars and bikes. If its a distance away, it's not worth travelling if you don't know that the seller will accept the price that you'd offer. I always make it clear, I'll pay that price if its as described.

Also done it the other way round when selling. Agreed a price selling my car last year with a guy from Ireland, he flew over with 8k in cash, got a train to the city where I work, waked to work so he knew I wasn't dodgy, showed him the car, walked to the bank and paid in the cash, gave him the keys, did the paperwork and he set off home....

Sounds like what I've done on the last couple of cars I've bought - I ring up, make an offer and when that's accepted, promise to pick the car up on x day at x time, no tyre kicking etc on the single condition that the car is as described. In my case, it's been because the cars were too good to miss out on and buying this way offers some hope that the car won't be sold before I turn up and pick it up.
