I have my car up for sale - asking £2195. I'm out of the country at the moment but my Dad selling it for me. Guy calls and offers £1950 on condition I accept his offer before he sees the car. I have sold cars before but never had this. Seems a bit odd that someone would offer without seeing it first. My mind started thinking things like money laundering or counterfeit notes!!

Any advice appreciated. Not had any other takers so tempted to call him.

Cheers.

Invest a couple of pounds in a note checking pen and make sure that there are at least 3 people there for your side when the deal goes down.

Probably testing the water before they come to view. Before they even come and see the car they have got £245 off the asking price and will most definately beat you down even further on the day.

Doesn't seem dodgy to me. He has offered a price he's willing to pay subject to it being as described... If he cannot afford anymore it would certainly save him a trip

As above, tell him that is the price and their will be no negotiation. If he pays cash, take precautions as advised above.

He may intend to just strip the car for parts so doesn't care to much about the condition, are there photos with the advert?

If its counterfeit cash why does he care if he gets a discount?

Sounds like what I've done on the last couple of cars I've bought - I ring up, make an offer and when that's accepted, promise to pick the car up on x day at x time, no tyre kicking etc on the single condition that the car is as described. In my case, it's been because the cars were too good to miss out on and buying this way offers some hope that the car won't be sold before I turn up and pick it up.

Talk is cheap, never engage (waste your time) talking money on a car over the phone. He, if he ever materialises, has already chipped you more than 10%, think it would stop there?
Invite all serious buyers to come and check and inspect and bring their cash, the others are only dreamers.
  • I find it hard to belive that a serious buyer would do the deal without seeing and testing the car. The friend who collects it will probably have a draft for more than the agreed amount and ask you to refund the excess in cash.

If I was thinking of travelling a few miles to see a car then I would be wanting to know if the seller was serious (most people over estimate the value of their [STRIKE]pile of scrap[/STRIKE], sorry treasured vehicle.)

As I already said, I've done this more than once. However, I have been spending in the hundreds, not thousands, have known exactly what I'm after and what questions to ask, and have been travelling far too far to come back without a car!
