Kiddo wants a job.....

So, me and Kiddo are looking online to see if she can get a Summer job. She's keen to earn some dosh while she's revising for her GCSEs. The problem is, she's not 16 til the end of June, and she goes back into 6th form at the beginning of September. Does anyone know if there's anyone who employs 15 year olds, or who may be happy for her to apply?

    Paper rounds.

Or get lucky, its possible to get a job at her age but its usally very small local businesses that need abit of extra help (and don't want to pay to much for it)

Its all cause of insurance I belive :(

We've googled loads of places, and they all say 16. It's a real shame, cos she's really motivated. Just her date of birth letting her down! Thanks for your reply.

has she gone round the local small shops, hairdressers, corner markets etc, see if they need any part-time help/Saturday help? It can lead to more hours in the summer holidays.

When I worked at Sainsburys when I was a teenager they used to employ 15 year olds, they were the only supermarket to do so but this was a while back now! :)

Do you actually mean while she's revising; wouldn't it be better for her to wait until she finishes her exams?

They are quite restricted in the hours they are allowed to work so most employers won't employ them. I have 2 July daughters who have never managed to find a summer job anywhere because they will employ a 16/17 y/o over them every time.

Most newsagents don't deliver papers any more so a paper round is not possible quite often.

Hairdressers employ hairdressing students so don't need anyone on a 'summer' basis.

Little cafe's might need waitresses, they seem to be advertised a fair bit near me. Most little local businesses often seem to employ family and friends without any advertising of jobs.

I'd recommend she popped round with a CV and see if she can hit jackpot!

If she found something then we'd be happy for her to work a few hours leading up to her exams, as long as it didn't interfere with her revision. She'd then hope to get more hours when her exams are finished at the beginning of June.

My DD is 17 and couldn't get anyone to take her on before she was 16 though some school friends managed to get jobs in cafes but the wages were very low.

Not sure where you live but DD applied for so many jobs before securing an interview with Next. Boots and Miss Selfridge. The online tests are a joke for the likes of KFC etc. and interviews were tough for a 16 year old with no experience - note as you apply on line and have to go through on line assessments/test if you answer no to customer service experience you won't go any further!!

DD first job was with Next for Xmas. They kept delaying the start date and she only had a few shifts with them in the end. IMO they only really wanted them for marking up sale stock. Training was poor for tills, they just left her to e-training. They paid £4.95ph

DD now working in Boots and she loves it. They did on the job and e-training. They gave her extra shifts over Xmas (she normally works 4 hours Sat). She's paid about £6.37 ph and it will go up at 18.

DD registered for job alerts with major retailers and as soon as you get the alert you need to apply as they work on first come basis often.

If she does secure an interview, research the interview routine they use as many retailers like to test them on the shop floor.

I worked from the November in year 11 and all the way through to end of 6th form, 12 hours a week when I was in yr 11/12 & 9 hours in year 13. I just took holiday (Sainsburys gives 6 weeks) when my exams were on so I just did less hours or none that week.

So if she were to find a job soon she could just try to save her holiday hours for then.

I think GCSEs are more important right now, and I'd encourage her to wait and look after the exams are over, unless she's able enough to get an A without really trying.

These grades will have a huge impact on her future prospects. Universities will look at them when deciding whether to accept her, and if she doesn't get Cs in the core subjects an awful lot of doors will close for her until she does.

It'll be much much simpler when she's 16 anyway, she might just end up wasting a lot of valuable time trying to find something and having no luck.
