  • Lots of veg box people now do meat.

http://www.abelandcole.co.uk/ certainly do (can't comment on the quality as I'm a veggie but it will definitely be organic)

I second http://www.abelandcole.co.uk fab food, and the meat comes really well packaged as well. Also the pork is so tasty, especially the bacon.

https://www.donaldrussell.com is brilliant, good offers not cheap but you get what you pay for. Try the pave rump steaks - best I have ever tasted.

Donald Russell, once you use them (or just sign up to the website) they will send you regular offers.
    The fillet steaks are AMAZING!

I'm not sure that he is that good - certainly not as nice as the kosher butcher my granny uses but she's miles away! This butcher doesn't do any game even though I live not far from masses of woodland, the farms aren't local ones and the usual things you'd expect from a butcher (black pudding, haggis, goose fat) aren't available either. It's chicken, beef, pork and lamb in the same sort of cuts you get at Tesco/Asda

I don't like the idea of hanging around outside a shop until someone comes out to serve me to be honest.

Fair enough. I was picturing it as the sort of place where you could just kind of poke your head through the door and make your presence known, so it would really be no different than waiting in a queue to be served. But if the layout/entry of the shop doesn't suit that, it was just a suggestion.

And yeah, it douesn't sound like it's all that great.

I stock up the freezer at a really good monthly farmer's market, there's some really nice and unusual stuff usually. Is that a possibility if there's one near you? Its a journey, but only once a month and you'd get variety and quality.

I have been using McCaskie's in Wemyss Bay for my meat and having it delivered.

    http://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/

They aren't the cheapest but their meat is superb especially their Gold Orkney beef. it really is fantastic. It is a lovely drive down the coast from where I am in Central Scotland but I have had deliveries made both to work and home and I cannot fault them.

Their square slice is mouth wateringly delicious as is their black pudding
  • Have you tried looking for a local farmer that sells meat to the public? We do this but are in Cornwall, people can come and see the animals if they wish, to satisfy themselves that they are well cared for and really do come from our smallholding, they are killed and cut locally, plus sausages, higs pudding made by a local butcher, then come back to us ready for freezing or eating!

Everyone should support their local butcher!!

Only if they're any good. A new butcher's opened in my town recently which I was excited about. I went to check it out just before Christmas. Nothing's free range, he can't tell you where it's sourced, the quality didn't look great and it's more expensive than the Waitrose across the road. Why would I shop there?

We've been using Donald russell for about 6 months now for mince, sausages and burgers and I wouldnt go back to the SM meat now :) They always seem to have something new on discount and are forever emailing me with free delivery codes.

I also like the fact they have a 100% guarantee on all their meats, ive only had to complain once (about the burgers cellophane covering getting split, which turned out to be because of the dry ice they use to package everything. They refunded me the cost of all the burgers without issue and assured me they were safe to eat)
