I'm going to a job interview without a tie

I do not think you can judge the present staff and say that's how you should go to interview.
I once worked at a place where when I met the MD I thought I was mistaken as he was wearing flip flops, cut off jeans and an old dirty t shirt. I thought he was a builder.
I am sure if I went to the interview to meet the FC dress so casual I'd not have got the job as he was in a suit. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Argument 1
All smart people wear ties
OP wants to be smart
=> OP must wear a tie
Argument 2
All people who wear ties are smart
OP wants to be smart
=> OP must wear a tie
I think the tie is the huge hangup about men's wardrobe. The logic above is true, but the premises are wrong. Ties are not essential to smartness - if you look at women's wardrobe, there is no equivalent to the tie on which there is even a false argument that wearing it is smart and not wearing it is not smart.
OP has researched and is going smart, having made a judgement call for this particular employer that a tie is not essential to smartness. He should feel confident in that decision.
And not ruin it with a £3 tesco tieYou might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0 -
At a job interview I was asked
"What would you say was your greatest weakness?"
I replied "Honesty."
The interviewer answered "I don't think honesty is a weakness."
My reply was "I don't give a &$£@ what you think."0 -
I'd happily go to an interview, business meeting or most things with out a tie. Only seem to wear for hatching , matching and despatching nowadays.
My current job title is marketing director.0 -

I never said that at all. At some jobs you wouldn't get the job if not in one that's all.if you look at women's wardrobe, there is no equivalent to the tie on which there is even a false argument that wearing it is smart and not wearing it is not smart. It's called a suit and I have always worked with people who wear themYou might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0

I would view a interviewee not wearing a tie as showing a lack of disrespect for myself and the recruitment process.
Regardless of the fact that no one in the office wears a tie, and they are only worn when meeting customers.
I tend to decide within in the first 2 mins of the meeting if the candidate is getting the role or not and any questions I ask just confirm my initial decision a non suited and booted candidate just would leave a bad first impression.0 -
I agree with DKLS. It is all about first impressions and the expectations of the person who is interviewing you. Some interviewer's might be happy with interviewees not wearing a tie, others not. Is it worth taking a chance.
My wife went for an interview once in very smary casual wear, the other staff in the office were in casual wear. She didn't get the job, on feedback she was told that there was an expectation that she should have worn a business suit. She does now....0
