If you are worried about health problems with specific breeds then perhaps you could consider a cross-breed as the are reputed to be healthier. They are also cheaper!

We have a cavelier king charles spaniel cross poodle and she is a joy. She has the sweet and gentle nature of the spaniel with the trainability and low/no shedding of the poodle.

    Not so on either count!

also the boom in "designer" crossbreeds means that the feeble-minded and dim-witted will pay far more, simply for the stupid made-up name, than either of the parent breeds cost .

The cross breeds being healthier myth is just that.

Anyway, have you considered a poodle? I found my breeder at crafts for a standard, just waiting for her to call to say that the mum is with pup.

Toy and miniature poodles are among the healthiest and longest living breeds out there, crossing them with KC cavaliers with their many serious problems certainly won't make them any healthier!

I have a shih-tzu and a Scottish terrier, a few of my friends breed Shih-tzu and the ones who do their research tend to have few health problems.

    Personally i wouldn't have a shih-tzu again

Just bear in mind the grooming can add up ours is between 23-35 every few months and they can be very fussy!!

if you are after a puppy from a good breeder contact the breed clubs as they have a puppy co-ordinator who can usually help
  • Maybe a bit late with this. We looked at many breeds before deciding on a miniature Schnauzer, she is great, doesn't shed, is very good with kids, very lovable, doesn't bark much at all. Only thing she needs groomed every 2-3 months around £25 a time.
