I have been reading the posts and have come to a decision if we buy we will buy from a rescue centre.
I will be visiting this centre over the next week or so, looks like loads of dogs need help, We probably will go for a dog 1-3 yrs old too, skip the puppy stage.

I am a mini schnauzer owner

Wonderful, characterful, bundles of gorgeousness :D

Disadvantages: They need regular grooming, not just 6-8 weekly visits to a groomer but daily brushing. Can be noisy but with proper training most people can get this under control. Can be stubborn and have selective deafness.

Advantages: Very loyal, will take as much or as little exercise as you like. Cheeky, playful, funny.

I, personally, wouldn't have any other breed.

Another Miniature Schnauzer fan here. I totally agree with everything you say MatyMoo. They are very loyal and lovable breed and good thing to remember is they shed very little hair.

You should be aware that Many Tears have a very strict rehoming policy, you can see it on their website to check you'd meet their approval. (Not all rescues are so strict, so please don't be put off the idea if you don't.)

Also, most dogs from there are ex breeding dogs from puppy farms. They've been kept in appalling conditions and don't know how to behave like dogs. For that reason MT usually want them to go to a home where there's already a well behaved, calm dog to show them how!

I highly recommend visiting this forum: http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php

Put a post up in the 'homes offered' section outlining your circumstances and some very helpful and knowledgeable people will be along to give you advice or to recommend specific dogs.
  • I have a pom chi, and once she got out of the "Im cute and tiny, and get away with everything" mindset, she's a good dog.

Have you honestly thought of adopting a small staffy cross? they're hardy, friendly, and loving.

I have a mini schnauzer so i'm going to be biased.

Superb little dog, he can be a wee bit vocal around other dogs and a little protective of us.

No casting and a character that is huge in stature.

Not so good points - he needs groomed every 6 weeks. He's a very handsome chap and he knows it.

  • For ANY breed you are interested in, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contact the Kennel Club for a list of that particular Breeds' Breed Clubs. Speak to them, outline your reasons for wanting one of the breed, even tell them how much you are looking to pay, you may find that they have some members who have puppies that they have 'run on' for showing but have failed to make the grade that they are looking to sell as a pet, or even a slightly older dog looking for a new home

ETA, these are the people who will know all about any health issues that the breed may have or be likely to have in the future and would also be able to give you lots of information on breeders to contact in your area

    My dad had a schnauzer

They apparently have hearing problems and dislike loud noises

Who says? I've had schnauzers for over 40 years and never come across this, well, apart from them barking at loud noises, which is hardly confined to schnauzers!

Definitely check out the breed club but please be careful if you go to the kennel club, they have in the past and possibly still do have puppy farm breeders on their lists.

I got my long-haired Chihuahua from a rescue centre and there are other small breed dogs at rescue centres too. You just have to watch the rescue websites and contact the centre and make sure they know you are serious about rehoming them. Dogsblog has lists of dogs in rescue centres all over the UK.

There is a little dog rescue website too Little Dog Rescue - Little Dogs Looking for Homes
