Transferring number to T-Mobile charge

Options
I have just started a new contract with T-Mobile and I am looking to keep my old mobile number from orange.

I just called T-Mobile with my PAC code but was told it will cost £17.50 to transfer my number - is this normal?

I was told as my bill starts on 20th of the month it would cost £17.50 to do today or if I called back on March 19th it would be free.

£17.50 sounds a lot just to keep number

£17.50 to port number to them?
They either misunderstood you or were in a joking mood.

Thats what I was thinking! I told the woman no way would I pay that and she said good plan call back on 19th. Could not believe it.

Think I will call back and hopefully speak to someone else

Sounds about right TBH, T-Mobile operate pro-rata billing, if you change your number mid way through a month they recalculate the call/text allowance and give you a portion from the date of the last bill to the date of the number change & a portion from the date of the number change to the date of the next bill.

They would also recalculate the line rental as this is paid in advance on the old number they will refund you the time from the change to the date of the next bill but then charge you for the period on the new number and for the next month in advance.

Take the advice & leave til the billing date

I don't know about halfway through a month but I've just left O2, rang T-mobile and gave them my pac code after just taking out a 2 year contract and it took the weekend to do (purely because it was the weekend) but it was free

Surely that doesn't make any difference as everything on the account is the same? When I moved to T-Mobile from O2 last year I phoned them, gave them my PAC, and everything was sorted in 2 days with no charge.
  • It is not the actual porting that will cost you, it will be the Service Plan costs between today and your next bill 20th March. If you port today for e.g. you will be charged line rental as soon as you're active. You will also continue to pay Orange until the PAC expiry date. This would mean you would end up paying twice.

Although she didn't explain it too well, she was actually doing you a favour.

Although having thought about it, is your new T-Mob contract actually live yet? If it is, then it won't matter, you'll still be paying. If they are waiting until your number comes across to actually activate your line and start charging you, then what I've said above is correct.
  • Oopsadaisydoddle sounds about right...I recently ported into TMobile and my bill has been devided up, the first week or so shows (and is billed) for the number Tmobile gave me and after that data another seperate (part of a month) bill for when my ported in number became active.

I don't know why they do this but also happened when I ported into Tesco a couple years back. It sounds like you were told in a slightly confusing way.
