I strongly/vehemently deny trying to sell them a 'dud' vehicle. I drove the car on & off their forecourt on Monday, & onto the same yesterday without any problem. Their own CCTV would show the car running without problem.
Just because you managed to drive the car onto their forecourt doesn't prove anything, and certainly doesn't disprove that there was an underlying major fault that you failed to disclose and would effect the trade-in valuation.

Can you please tell us what this "major fault" is?

Who is the dealer? Not Arnold Shark by any chance?

I wish I knew. All I know is it was absolutely fine when I drove it, but they say it is knocking and throwing black smoke out of the exhaust. I wonder what they've done to it. Why would it suddenly do this when they appraise it, without me present, when it certainly was doing no such thing as I was driving it. Their own CCTV will confirm this.

My issue is they asked what the problem was, I couldn't answer as I have no idea, but the same representative continued to sign the paperwork, accepting the terms of the agreed contract and signed to say they had sold the car to me and were in receipt of full payment.

No, I avoid them like the plague. It is Marshall Honda. Any experiences with them would be much appreciated.

what is the major fault they are claiming exists?

it seems odd reading the thread that this has not been mentioned. It must be something pretty obvious no?

Is the trade-in a diesel? Which make/model/age is it?

It is a Renault modus 1.5 dci diesel, 55 plate, 63013 miles. They gave me £2300 part-ex, but I swapped £300 of that to increase my warranty from 12 to 24 months.

How did you describe the vehicle to the dealer prior to them offering you a part-ex valuation?

As above. I haven't misled them in any way, as it arrived to them as stated, full working order. It was MOT'd on Jan 16th, with no faults or advisory notes, and accurate emissions certificate. It also has full service history.
