I wish my local Library was as quiet as this part of MSE

Sadly it's not. On a monday they have about 100 under 5's singing and running around up and down the aisles. Pushchairs and tantrums everywhere. It has to be heard to be believed.
I remember when you couldn't even whisper in a Library without being shushed by an assistant. (70's)
Great days.

Well excuse me Princess!
Todays libraries have to be more than just about books....tbh, in my experience, most people go in to use the PC's.
Surely you would expect there to be a bit of noise at an under 5's session...right?0 -

Yes but the under 5's shouldn't be there. They don't read there, they get read too. That could be done at a playgroup or somewhere where people are not working/studying/reading and prefer a bit of peace and quiet.0 -
I feel your pain...but as long as the children are running around in the children's area, then all is cool.
If you are hanging around the children's area, despite not having any children, then er...can you go elsewhere...?
If not then have a word with a member of staff and they will probably walk over in that direction and hopefully guilt trip the parent to actually get their child to behave....Most commonly heard is "You'll hvae to stop messing around now Jayden or THE MAN will tell you off"....
Let me know how you get on...0 -

No, its not cool. Their noise travels throughout the whole floor.

I was on the computer in my library last week when the librarian brought several groups up and patiently explained what different sections of the library were for. It was lovely to see kids being shown round a library, as this is the start of encouraging a love of books.0 -

Libraries have changed and they're no longer silent places for books. They're community hubs, they're places where people can go to learn IT skills, where children can take part in singing, reading and dancing, where the elderly can go and have board games afternoons and knitting sessions. Without these users the local council wouldn't hesitate to close them down. You may not like the noise but be glad that people are enjoying your library. Once a library is shut down there isn't much chance of getting it back so be glad of these noisy kids as the alternative is worse.0 -

Why does your preference for sedentary behaviour trump their preference for being healthy and active? A library is a repository for resources such as books periodicals films music and the like, not aware of any definition that says it must be quiet.
IMO it's a very positive thing that children are being introduced to such facilities at a young age. If you want peace and quiet photocopy the material or check it out, go home or to the nearest graveyard.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
I have to agree with Cleggy (is this the first time ever?), a library is supposed to be a quiet place, where people can read as well as select books.
Here are the rules from the London School of Economics library

These rules pretty much apply to any library which I have visited.0 -
We need to get this part of the board moving! Had a flurry of activity a few weeks ago, now nothing

And worse still, we have gone from serious physical activity to reading, all in the space of a couple of days:eek:
Still, I did a bit of a monster session at the gym yesterday - 40 minutes on the bike (including the evil interval session) and then another 40 minutes on the cross trainer. I could hardly walk to the changing rooms after:o
Then in the evening I played badminton with the OH for an hour (luckily I do not have to move around very much, because she is still learning). She can now serve correctly, but doesn't like the shuttle smashed at her - couldn't resist doing it, the first time in about ten years - and it was a pretty feeble backhand smash:o0
