Sorry I know its an old one but @~$$%££$$%*&^%~~@@£$%!!!!!!!!!
there thats better thankyou. To receptionists.. no its NOT MY FAULT I am unwell so stop treating me like an inconvenience.
Trying to get an appointment, the doctor I need is fully booked through all next week. Jolly inconsiderate of people not to plan an illness well in advance.
Only choice is go to A&E later, as if they don't have enough to do!!! but my injured wrist is just not getting better, still not convinced it not broken somewhere.

You refer to "the doctor I need" - is another one not available?
If you do believe you have broken your wrist, A&E would be the most suitable place as you would need an x-ray to confirm. Perhaps you could call NHS Direct to see what they suggest?0 -
You have to book 6 weeks in advance in my doctors, trying to get an emergency appointment is like trying to get to the pope.
The receptionist wouldn't give me my twice yearly appointment for the nurse as she said it was now only yearly. She was lying and the nurses went ballistic when i eventually got to see them.
I much prefer to see the nurses as they listen to what you are saying. I had been going for 10 years with chest pains, only to get more indigestion tablets each time. I was frantic as i knew there was something wrong. The nurse listened and insisted the doctor referred me. It now seems i need a bypass.0 -
Are there any sit and wait appointments at the end of the normal appointments. If you say you need to see a GP urgently then you'll always be fitted in there by the receptionists at my surgery but they won't guarantee which GP sees you. It's important you use the term urgent and not emergency - if you say it's an emergency then you'd be told to phone an ambulance.. That on the instructions of the senior partner not the receptionist choice.
Do you have a minor injuries unit or walk in unit near to where you live.
In my surgery, if the GP thinks you've broken something then you'll be told to go to A&E anyway.0 -
This makes me realise how lucky I am with my latest GP. I can call up at any time between 9 & 12 or 4 & 6 and get an appointment for the same day. On the rare occasion they can't fit you in, they get the doctor to phone you. There's never more than a 5 minute wait after your appointment time, and if you need contraception other than the pill (ie implanon, Depo) they do it in surgery, often during your appointment. And it's a local number only.
This is a great contrast to my old doctors. Urgent appointments all gone 5 minutes after the phone lines open, waits of over an hour after your appointment times as standard, queues out the door t see the one receptionist for 3 doctors and several nurses/midwives/etc, expensive phone number, uninterested doctors who miss obvious issues (like jaundice!) and you're referred to a clinic miles away for most contraception. These two doctors are about 0.5-1 mile apart, but worlds apart in their conduct.0 -
Well two weeks ago it felt broken after an accident, went to A&E, the dubious acting technician took x-rays (I heard her mutter for a while with her colleague that they were poor, her colleague just said.. oh send em through like that)
The doctor said she saw no break and the xrays would be reviewed by someone higher in the next couple of days.
a week later hardly any progress, went to doctor (the surgeries only ortho specialist) he signed me off a week and looked on the computer where the hospital had noted perhaps a follow up x-ray may be needed (apparently fractures don't always show for a while) my doctor didn't think it the case.
So another week later and I still can't lift a cup without a wooden spoon between my teeth first. I wanted to see the doctor to get signed off and for further advice/referral but can't for another week!!
So I can't see much option other than A&E.:(:(:(:(:(

My a & e department has a walk in centre for things like this. The doctor would send you for an x ray anyway so why not go straight there ?0

Yup will be going later when wife is home. Its just me, indirectly I work in A&E's (I look after some of their stuff) and I know how pushed it is in there so hate taking their time but no choice.0 -
I must have been really lucky with Doctors, the last three I have been registered with you've always been able to get a same day appointment as long as you ring between 8-9am. To be honest, for a suspected fracture i'd go to A&E rather than docs though0

I got a long lecture for not going straight to A&E when I broke my wrist. NHS Direct recommended not going to A&E but an Urgent Care centre much further away. I was later told that they would have sent me back to A&E as the UCC has no xray facilities. Fortunately I'd decided not take the advice from NHS Direct as I was in too much pain to travel great distances.0

I have to say that my doctors are great; they're lovely, and you can get in on the same day, if you are prepared to wait up to an hour, or you can book a pre-booked time, and usually get in within 3 to 4 working days...
But the receptionists ARE snotty cows, who seem to think they are somehow something special because they work for the 'doctors.' I have had many a time where I have been waiting to pick up a prescription, and they quickly glance up from the paperwork they are apparently busy with; they don't acknowledge me, they carry on shuffling the papers, then they answer the phone, then they walk off! Just leaving me there.
I pinch myself sometimes to make sure I am still there, take a look in the mirror in the reception to see if I am actually visible, and then eventually (sometimes a full five minutes or more after getting there; ) I will be acknowledged.
I have no idea why they're like this, but I have been registered with four doctors surgeries in my life, and the receptionists have ALL been the same: snooty, snotty, and acting like they're 'above' you. I have never 'got' why, and I don't know why I have never made a complaint.0
