Hi,
I am going to work in the US for several months and I currently have an iphone 4 on 3 in the UK. I was wondering if I would be able to get the US equivalent of a PAYG microsim from a US service provider to put in this phone for the 2/3 months that i will be there? I understand I will have to unlock my phone before I do this. Would it be better just to buy a cheap phone when I'm there tomake necessary calls/texts, I should be able to use my iphone on wifi to be able to use whatsapp/skype/viber to contact home without a service plan?
TIA

you can use your phone on wifi without a sim......
if you DO want to use a US sim then locate and order one online BEFORE you go (ebay is a good bet). I went to the states a year ago and expected to be able to buy a PAYG sim to put in my phone but didnt have any luck.... they are not as common over there as you might think. Sims tend to come packaged with phones, rather than sold alone.0 -
Might be worth a look at Touristsim ???

Walk into any network owned AT&T or T-Mobile store & you can get one for free or very little. Watch for data costs though, not cheap!

Your best bet is T-Mobile prepaid. You have a number of options:
- $2/day for unlimited incoming/outgoing calls and texts and data at 2G speed
- $3/day for unlimited incoming/outgoing calls and texts and data at 3G speed
- $30/month for unlimited incoming/outgoing texts and data at 3G speed and 100 minutes of incoming/outgoing calls - see http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
The free SIM cards are standard 2FF mini-SIMs, but you can exchange them for 3FF micro-SIMs or 4FF nano-SIMs in a T-Mobile shop.0
