I was in Wisbech ASDA a few weeks back. There were BEGGARS at the entrance, the car park was full of rubbish, bins overflowing. DIRE.

  • I posted previously that I enjoy wandering around different supermarkets to see what's on offer. Tesco's have a new 'match it' policy which may spoil my fun. We shopped and got a voucher for the difference between the amount the items we actually bought and the cost in other places. We divided the shopping into two lots at the checkout so as to get 2 £5 off vouchers for next shop when we intend to divide into 2 lots of £40 and save £5 on each - £10 savings altogether. In our case if we had shopped at other supermarkets, we would only have saved 7p on our first 'lot'. It turned out we saved nearly £3 on our 2nd 'lot' compared to elsewhere.
Whether you like a particular store or the people in it etc., Tesco can be a winner when it comes to moneysavers. If you don't like certain products from certain stores, buy those items elsewhere.

I've lost count of the amount of beggars in various Tesco stores I've visited (more then one occasion, more then one beggar) and it does seem to be on the rise. I don't know if staff are aware or if they can stop it, to them another head is another customer and I doubt they'd do anything to stop it if they did know.

The only one I feel strongly against is Morrisons. When I lived on the outskirts of town that was the only one that was close to me and I hated having to use it. Now I mostly use Tesco and a whole foods store called Real Foods. Its great for my intolerances and as they weigh and package things themselves you get different sizes and prices which is great when you are just cooking for yourself.

I have a large Tesco at the end of my road and I have no complaints. I'm feeling particularly nice about them thanks to my new George Foreman from the clubcard points. The staff are very helpful, especially when I need something on the shelves above the chest freezers (which are very inconvenient for someone who is short) or the higher shelves.

I often go to Farmfoods for frozen veg and fruit as well, luckily they are all in the same area so I can go from one to the other.

Another reason which others here seem to have already mentioned, is the quality of food.

About 2 months ago I walked into Sainsburys and walked out with loads of reduced food! I was lucky- I shop quite late, had found on the shelf a load of ham and chicken (premium range) that had gotten to the end of it's shelf life. As no/very few other customers shop so late the staff member reduced it to pennies for me! I've been eating this ever since.

However, on running out I went to replace it at Tesco. I again was lucky enough to find a single pack of reduced "finest" ham and some of the 'normal' stuff, ate some yesterday for dinner.

What on Earth has happened to the taste of this stuff?! I found it so tasteless that I had to look on the back of the pack to see if they'd accidentally added plastic to the ham. In fact the 'Finest' was apparently 100% un-reformed ham. It never used to taste this tasteless and I'm not one for favouring salt so it wasn't the omission of that nor of chemicals. I just wonder what exactly they managed to do to change normal meat... I now know to shop elsewhere!

I also get fed up with fresh fruit and vegetables going bad within days. I have not as much chance to shop as frequently as I'd like, can't get to market stalls very often and would have hoped that on purchasing something it wont go bad before the date goes bad. Not so. I have had peppers turn soft and watery, had plums with a brown fragmented stone core centre, had packaged melon which turned before the very next day. Then you get on to the prices which these days are rarely lower then even Sainsburys when you consider gram for gram. I remember the days (around 5 years ago!) when Sainsburys used to be at least 1/3 more expensive for the same thing: not the same anymore. I am fed up of paying for things which end up being thrown away as I can ill afford to do so.

Talking of beggars in Asda, I visited the Kings Hill store in Kent one afternoon and in the entrance were chuggers representing the dogs trust. As I exited a chap asked me for a donation which I politely declined and his response, in a very loud voice, was "oh! So you don't care about dogs then?"
I just dead eyed him but I though what a bloody cheek!!!

  • The beggars comments made me giggle, sorry!
We were hassled by beggars outside Harrods Food Hall the other day! (we'd only gone to browse) She wouldn't go away and it really annoyed me. I realise people are struggling (me incuded) but if I've said no, I mean no. I don't want to have to justify my decision.

Re supermarket preference, I can cope just about with Tesco but they are just incapable of getting their offers right, particularly in our local Express and it really winds me up. I always stand my ground though.
I recently did a 'click and collect' because I had a voucher which was actually all excellent.

Sainsbury's is fine in store but online... worst shopping experience ever and no reply to my email of complaint over a month ago! Never again.

Waitrose is excellent. Yes, it is more expensive for some things but a lot of it is comparable to other supermarkets and if you go late there are excellent reductions.

Ocado is my favourite for online shopping.
Excellent produce, Tesco price match and a fantastic delivery service.

I only have our local Asda to comment on and it's dire, really horrible. Dirty, dark, dingy and just a thoroughly depressing experience. Maybe this isn't the norm though?

We don't have a local Aldi or Lidl but when we do, I will definitely try them.

Morrisons... The one nearest to us is still too far to bother with unless I'm in the area. Good fish counter.
