The post from Doshwaster is most helpful. When airlines quote the price for a flight is there somewhere on their websites one can find a breakdown of the costs like above. I was amazed at how high a proportion of the cost was for the fuel surcharge. Are all airlines the same?

I'm sure all airlines are different but it's good when they do give a breakdown. Just try a dummy booking and see what the options are on the page where it gives you a final price.

It is rather sneaky, however, to have the "fuel surcharge" separated out. It really should be part of the fare.

Funny, when ryanair used to give the price all broken down, everyone wanted it "all inclusive"
  • When I book I like to know straight away what is the minimum price we have to pay for a flight which would include fuel surcharges. Extras like luggage where you have a choice could be listed below. Some airlines do this and others try and draw you in with a low headline price then you find compolsary extras added on afterwards.
  • I thought I had read somewhere that airlines had to be more upfront with the total cost of the flight. Not adding on fuel surcharges, Air Passenger duty and other levies during the course of booking. The price advertied is the total cost of the flight. They can add on extras like hold baggage and extra legrooom etc later. Is that correct or have I misunderstood.
