Bought a car.. made a really stupid blunder!

Options
Found this rather nice little 1L vauxhall corsa. Lovely little car on the outside, inside is decent, engine bay looks well maintained.. good price..

My partner said its hard work to drive. Now the pedals are a bit strange asnd stiff but i thought its one of those things you get used to.

Then they said the steering gets a bit stiff on 3 point turns.. tonight I look under the hood and find it doesn't even have power steering  :o

How on earth did I miss that? - Car drives pretty lightly but at slow speeds its stiffer to turn. I drove a non PS nissan micra years ago and it felt like a bus in comparison so I didn't even realise this didn't have PS.

So, my partner don't want the car now. How on earth am I gonna get rid of a car without power steering?

It will have power steering but it'll be electronic assistant. What year ?

It may not be functioning properly,

I must say my corsa which is a 2002 model is a bit heavy as full lock and slow speed, but I'm never rushing when doing three point turns anyway.

If its function ring properly then it case of selling it on but you'll loose some money in doing so.
  • If it's an old Corsa it may not have power steering
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

I used to drive a classic car as a daily driver. No power steering, wide wheels and very heavy steering.
After a short time you just get used to it and you'd be surprised what it does for your arms!
    Give it a while first.

It's a W reg but its a very basic 1L with just a 3 cylinder engine. Lovely little motor if I'm honest but yeah the pedals and gearbox are a pain. The steering isn't quite as much of an issue but how was I so stupid? :o

I have a Range Rover and a Land Rover, neither of which have power steering. As you say, you soon get used to it.

    Spinach helps.

Why are you so worried about power steering? Most car's didn't have it 20 years ago and we managed ok.

I don't see why it's stupid to have a small car without power steering as it's surely one less thing to go wrong. It's obviously an issue when you have a car designed for power steering lose it as the steering can be surprisingly heavy but I did drive a Corsa 1.0 without power steering and didn't think it was an issue, same for my Metro which also didn't have it.

  • A year ago I needed a new car on a very limited budget and had to buy a non PAS Micra (P reg)... It was that or no job as I drive for work. I was worried about the steering but had to get used to it. Within a week I couldn't tell the difference (I am female btw) and even now when I drive a PAS car with lightened steering (its a wheelchair accessible car) I still prefer my Micra. The only time I remember is when I get caught/boxed in after parking.

Don't get rid of it just yet ;)

no power steering is fine, i would be more worried about if anything goes wrong with the engine as the 3 cylinder ones can be hard to find.

    It's called progress.

You could apply your questionable logic to so many queries posted here that your point seems completely senseless.

If something wasn't common twenty years ago then it becomes pointless wanting it now?

    Very silly.
