Just had exactly the same experience this week. Phoned to cancel & the first customer advisor put me through to retentions, he dropped the price slightly but still nowhere near to last years price.

Back to RAC via quidco, & getting the same package as AA for £50 (after quidco) instead of £184
  • Loyalty means nothing these days, all the best deals are for new customers.

Look up what the 'New Customer' price for the same level of cover from the alternatives (RAC, Green Flag etc.) would be. Then phone up AA tell them that's what you are willing to pay, take it or leave it, they will agree and if they don't you just take your custom elsewhere.
  • I had the opposite situation with RAC. Renewal came through at around £170.

Out of the blue, the AA called as we have home contents through them, same cover offered for £100.00. So I phoned RAC to inform them of this and surprise surprise, they matched it. Cheeky barstewards. I almost went with AA out of principle.
  • But if it wont start at home your not covered and breakdown outside a dealers you have to take it there you cannot goto the cheaper guy 200 yards down the road.
Not my experience. In their terms. "They will tow you to their garage or a destination of your choice as long as it is not further than the approved garage."
Nobody can make you take your car anywhere.

Just got my renewal through from Autoaid - £39 for me and the wife in any car. Cover includes :

    Roadside assistance
Car and Passenger recovery to any UK destination
    Home breakdowns
    Emergency travel and overnight accommodation
Cover for caravans and small trailers
    Cover for theft and vandalism

likewise. Found them through here. Basically it is an insurance policy.

you pay for the call out/tow but then claim it back. All other stuff parts etc is at your expense but that's the same as AA/RAC anyway.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Although AA were a bit more expensive than alternatives it's worth it for us as we holiday in the USA and get AAA discounts on hotels and other attractions by using AA card.
Saves us more than the AA membership costs :)

I've been with Quoteline Direct ( http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/breakdown/ ) for a couple of years, mainly because I wanted Europe-wide cover. At £59 for full cover it seems like very good value. I called them out once - couldn't fix at the roadside (which was fair enough given the fact that the ECU had melted) and it was a Sunday so the garages were closed, but they organised getting the car to a local garage the next day.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

On the off chance you have a Toyota, you can join Club Toyota for £64 a year for full AA cover.

    Thank you Horizon81 You've just saved me £134-19 :T :T :T

My AA quote for renewal of roadside, homestart & relay, due at the end of March, was £198.19. This includes the wonderful 'gold membership' with all the additional benefits that I have absolutely no need for. I took a big gulp when I saw the amount they want to charge me, and thankfully headed for MSE and found this thread.

I've rung Club Toyota and they let me join on my Rav4, starting end of March, for £64 as you say. Reading the small print it seems to cover exactly the same services that I had on my AA membership, and is even provided by the AA. Same service for less than a third of the cost. :)

thank you for all your replies
Just the sort of info I needed to make a decision. I think the worst thing was they were trying to make it look like they were doing me a favour with their 'Gold card ' membership. Off to quidco and green flag now.
