Nice idea....maybe UK PLC should (as we will not be able to produce enough of our own fuel in the future) look to other countries to supply us,.... if we don't like the price..... change provider as Martin advocates for our domestic suppliers.

As you say Fred not only guarentee Gazprom our business if they fix the price tariff...then the utility companies here who will all buy at the same "fixed" wholesale price can fight amongst themselves to sell the fuel on to us at a competative price.

Never happen though of course! ....However WHAT has happened is that today we have discovered that OFGEM is the Government's mouthpiece....informing us..... "You will pay what ever the supplier feels like charging.....you are over a barrell and will be forever.

It seems that OFGEM, instead of telling us we will be paying more in the future ....but OFGEM will be fighting our corner....it is as I said appears to be just the messenger.

I'm sure what we heard today will be echoed each and every year now.

For all those that believe in global warming and the climate change theft.

Ask your self this, why have gas prices risen so much in the last 5 years when wholesale prices have remained the same?

Why has the current and previous chairman (both still on the committee) of the green energy committee both got sizeable financial interests in the wind far/green energy business and make good money from taxpayer subsidies each year and one of them is currently under investugation for not declaring it.

The two gentlemen's names are John Gummer and Tim Yeo. And SamCam's dad is also making £350,000 a year from the taxpayer in subsidies and is set to make more - that's Cameron's father in law.

So, you green and cold with no money and they go very rich.

Wholesale gas prices have hardly remained the same throughout the last 5 years. In any data set it is fairly easy to pick out a statistic that at first inspection appears to support the argument you seek to make, but this is a particularly lazy effort at pulling the wool over people's eyes. Anyone who wants to know what wholesale gas prices have really done over the last few years should google it and you will find a pretty volatile history, that depending on where you start, can support either side of a debate.

"If you can imagine a ride on a rollercoaster at a fairground, then this winter we are at the top of the circuit and we head downhill – fast."

Confusing language. It seems to be saying prices have peaked, and will be cheaper very soon.

The main problem I have with power cuts is that the central heating will not work, despite having plenty of gas.

Plan A is a petrol powered generator, but what would be more convenient is a gas powered generator, so I don't have to keep topping it up with fuel. Pull cord start like a lawn mower.

I flip the 100A switch to isolate the house, plug the generator into a 13A socket, start it, and let there be light. I would like to have the freezer working, and some lights. 3kW? 2kW is probably a bit borderline.

Sorry Eco person, but you're wrong, the prices don't lie and anyone can Google UK gas wholesale prices history to see that I'm correct.

I think what the rather poorly made comment was meant to convey, is that we're at the peak of power production and during this year the coal and gas fired power stations are being closed down due to emission legislation. Whilst we (our government) dithers on building replacement nuclear power stations.

If we lived in a common sense world, we would say to the EU, we need to keep the gas & coal stations running for a few more years and get a move on with the nuclear stations. Only we don't, the elites are happy to pocket more money through green power and wind farms, whilst the rest of us go into fuel poverty.

As for the generator, as long as you buy a four stroke unit, you can buy a gas conversion kit to run it from LPG. If fitted you can still run it from petrol if needs be.

LPG is still a bottle that runs out, and from my experience of Calorgas, it's all sold out the moment it gets cold, which is why I have two Calorgas bottles now. Sods law, haven't used them the moment I got the second bottle.

    What's happened to the Bloombox?

All fuel runs out, you just need a bigger container. Get yourself a storage tank.

Don't forget, with these conversion gets, you can switch it from gas to petrol.

We needn't worry about power cuts in 2015-16 we have plenty of coal still underground in the UK, just need to keep open the closing down power stations. We will need more CO2 in the atmosphere to counteract the forthcoming mini ice age which is on it's way as the sun goes into a Maunder minimum or perhaps worse.
If anyone thinks that wind turbines will save us see, www.bmreports.com/bsp/
It shows what percentage of electricity is being produced by various plants in the UK, coal is around 40% wind 4.5% (it was 0.5% yesterday in calm conditions). It also shows how much we buy in from France and the Netherlands.

Here's data on UK wholesale and retail gas prices (second chart). As you can see the wholesale price has varied hugely, from a low of around £35 to a high of almost £100 in the last five years. Even since just 2009 it's varied by 100% between low and high value.
