Can Eon do this?

How could you not notice that you've paid nothing towards your electricity bills since April 2012? Assuming that you has a DD in place before then, it's hardly credible that they would coincidentally stop taking your DD at the same time the meter may have failed (which may have been much later than April 2012 anyway). Even if they'd read the meter and it showed zero consumption from the previous read (which would raise a query), you'd still have been paying the standing charges, and billed accordingly.
The supplier is only required to read the meter once every two years, Other reads are up to you, and it's best to submit them quarterly to avoid this kind of situation.
What happens if they do not do this?
We had an email saying someone was going to come and read the meter but they never did and we ended up getting another estimated bill.0 -

Poppyoscar... ironically i input the elec reading a digit wrong in sept and they called me as it looked like my meter had gone all the way round!
the women from eon had me on the phone and we discussed my meter reading, and it was the same as the last one and she still didnt pick up that there was an issue!!
so it definatly isnt us trying to not keep the readings up to date!!0 -
tink, if I were you I would wait and see what they come up with and then 'negotiate' with them.0

Your 110 Elec Kwh consumed in a week,( 15.7 a day), seems very, very high considering you have Gas Heating - If you have a Hot water tank with an Imersion heater, check that it is not being left ON 24/7.
110 kWh in a week is not particularly high, even in a house with gas heating.
You are home all day, with a new baby. Washing machine is probably running more than before. Do you have a tumble dryer? They can really eat electricity.
With gas heating, electricity usage doesn't vary an awful lot through the year, especially if you use energy efficient bulbs.
When E.On estimate your usage, it might be worth pointing out to them how your circumstances have changed, so that they can take that into account.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Then on receipt of the estimated bill, you submit your own readings online or by phone and they send you a revised bill.
The supplier has a legal obligation to read every two years at least. No free lunch, and no free laptop

i was still paying my direct debit as normal, and giving my readings online, i didnt notice that they werent going up as i just input the numbers!
maybe silly of me but thats what happened! You would have though eon might have noticed that the sept and december readings were the same!!
So you have been paying towards your bill for the whole period the meter was stopped. When your new bill is estimated, it will show a credit for the DD payments received since the last valid reading.
You need to understand that the reading and billing process is entirely computerised-no one individually checks the bills by hand. If you submitted a reading that was the same as the previous quarter, the system will rightly reject it as erroneous and substitute an estimated reading instead. Which is why you need to check your bills against actual readings. No free lunch, and no free laptop
