it cofirmed that £0 would be collected.
Can you be absolutely certain that it said "£0 would be collected by DD", and not that it said "£0 was due"?

MBNA statements have always had this clearly written on the front for as long as I can remember:
The full payment of £xxx will be collected from your nominated bank by Direct Debit on or after xx/02/13.
Please remember: your regular Direct Debit payment will always be taken, regardless of any additional payments you choose to make.

No, not absolutely certain. That's why I'm doing it again this month. I've made a payment just now so will check back tomorrow and do a screengrab if necessary (blanking out anything data sensitive). Of course, it could be the reason you gave, but next to 'direct debit amount' the figure had definitely reduced.

MBNA \ Virgin Statements always state that a mimimum pmt DD will always take the minimum installment regardless of any other payments or transactions made in the meantime. disregard what any interin online screen says and go with the printed statement..

While this is true, they should not provide conflicting information. I do not need to claim this indemnity, I just did it as a test.

They don't provide conflicting information though - they clearly state that your direct debit will be taken regardless of any additional payment that you make on the statement. The fact that the online service says that you don't owe anything after a manual payment is irrelevant.

It's not irrelevant - it clearly contradicts the wording on the statement and they should not be providing inaccurate information.

Two of my credit cards do not update the payment amount to be collected in the event of part payment and take the original figure, with wording as such also on statements This is how the MBNA system should operate.
  • Thanks for the advice everyone

Capital one have refunded the full direct debit amount back to the first direct account. Will take 1 working day. No charges incurred but lesson learnt. I'll leave the direct debit alone in future!
  • So much for 1 working day. Funds finally cleared today so took 12 days to sort out. Good job I've a favourable overdraft or it could have been expensive.

Lesson learnt. Don't be to eager to clear your cc balance. Wait for the dd!

Or only setup the DD for the minimum payment, then you'll only ever go in credit by that amount and still have the safety that DDs give you.
