Last Min Holidays - Turn up and go?

I have always wondered if last min holidays are real. Mrs McDuck and I have booked 10 days off in early June and both are up for a little bit of an adventure.

Therefore does anyone have any tips / views as to whether is possible to simply turn up at the airport and go and get great deals?

If it is really possible is just the package style holidays or can you get anywhere in the world. (visa allowing!)

Anybody out there done this?

It's always possible to turn up at the airport and go (maybe not to your first choice) but 99% of the time you will not get a great deal for this - you will pay top price. And you've no guarantee you will be able to get BACK on your chosen day.

A charter flight or package holiday using it is more of a possibility - still best booked through a travel agent a couple of days before.

I just did a search leaving tomorrow/monday and some nice little bargains came up

    BAOBAB LODGE
    Kenya Mombasa North Coast

    AAA, All Inclusive
    £254pp

    4A AI DOM REP (NORTH)
    Dominican Republic Allocated On Arrival

    AAAA, All Inclusive
    £164.00 pp

    both 7 nights
They still can be got if you dont mind were you go

Also if you go the the airlines home airport you are more likely to get a realy good deal on last minute schedule maybe not as cheap as it used to be but still cheap depending on how full/empty the plane is
If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel

    Hi,

OH and I ALWAYS book just the day or two before departure.

MUCH cheaper and often some really good deals like 5 star for the cost of 3 star and cheaper flights to boot.

Do it. You won't be sorry.

Or do a flight only and book accom when there UNLESS you are travelling at peak time. (We never do), in which case book accom on the net before you go and likewise the car.

Just relax and have fun. (We are both in our 50s BTW)

I use https://www.mytravel.co.uk use the last minute seach or try https://www.eclipsedirect.co.uk

Another good tip is use http://tawl.holiday.co.uk/(n1kjyk45g2vaee55irvbuv45)/hp/default.aspx?WebsiteGUID=cd695736-475d-4779-8f54-2ea6d62a6cd4&QID=62389&V=2.0.0.4 but dont price it upthrough them only search if a cheapy shows use the companies own web site its often cheaper +add any promo code to make it cheaper still

the prices above were base price but used as a guide to show what you can get last minute

We go to the teletext pages and find the 0800 numbers (my principles) and ring them and ask what deals they have for the next day or day after to xxx for x weeks departing in next 2-3 days.

Try it now. we aren't in peak time so do just that and see what is on offer flying out Monday or Tues to wherever and see what they can come up with.

Also better to fly midweek at as you will get more sociable flight times.

Hate waking at 2Am to get to the airport by 4am only to have the flight delayed by 4 hours.

(I have heard that 50 is the new 40!)

Thanks, I feel much better now.:)

Would these tips etc. for late bookings still apply in peak season/school holiday time? We were hoping to get away the middle 2 weeks in August but are finding it a wee bit expensive!
    cheers.
