I've just bought http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-315-OE&groupid=43&catid=2385&subcat=2418. I need to move my camcorder movies from my dell dimension 3000 where I used Nero 8 (no disk) to this new computer.
Which media suite would be best for my new pc?
Do I need a separate program for my pictures which are currently stored on the dell using a free (at the time) adobe program?
I'm going to transfer the stuff I have on the dell to my new pc using a memory stick as it's only word/excel docs, nero movies and adobe pics that are on the dell. Is that the right thing to do?
Could some please advise using simple termology?
Oh, and, can I use the firewire that's in my dell, in my new pc? Is it possible?

If the Dell still works then why not connect your new pc to your Old Dell and see if you can just to a straight transfer?
Or remove the HDD (HardDisk Drive) from the Dell and connect it to your new pc and transfer that way.
A memory stick will work but seems quite labourious.
Firmware is generally product specific (i think) which means i would download the new stuff for your new hardware, the wrong firmware can make things VERY difficult.
I don't know anything about media suites, sorry.0 -

How do you connect the the two pc-s? Also, my Dell runs XP and my new pc Windows 8. Would this make a difference?:j I hope my comment helps :T0 -
If you have XP Service Pack 3 installed, you can use Windows 8 Easy Transfer to move your data to your new machine. This can be done over the network if both are connected. If not consider using an external drive.
To find out which Service Pack you have, on the XP machine press and hold the Windows key and press Pause/Break. The info is under Windows Edition.
Moving the firewire card to the new PC depends on whether:
a) The new machine has the correct expansion socket available; and
b) The card is supported by Windows 8
If you post details of the firewire card (make/model) and make/full model number of new PC , someone will be able to confirmHow do I add a signature?0 -
If both computers will be connected to the same internet modem/router, either by cable or wireless, then you can enable sharing on the XP machine and connect to it from the Windows 8 PC.
Will cost you nothing and with just a bit of effort at first, will be easier than using a USB stick.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I'm trying to understand what's being said!!
My Virgin Media broadband is currently plugged into my Dell pc (yes, it's SP 3). When my new pc arrives I can't see how the wireless transfer would work as, at the mo - and as far as I'm aware, my broadband can only be plugged into one pc at a time. I don't think the new pc comes with a wireless card? Unless ' Asus USB-N10 WiFi 150Mbps Pen' is one?:j I hope my comment helps :T0 -
Yes the new PC has a wireless card as it's got Wifi in the title.... does your existing Virgin broadband have wifi (wireless) capability?
So if both PC's can be on the same home network then allowing files to easily be moved to and fro between computers is quite straightforward to do.
There's tons of info on how to do this example

From what you're saying about your VM broadband, it sounds like you only have a cable modem connected directly to the old PC, and do not have either a separate router or a combined modem/router.
The Asus USB-N10 WiFi 150Mbps Pen is indeed a wireless adapter, but if your VM set up is as above, then you do not currently have wireless capabilities.
It will help if you could describe your set up in detail (what devices you have between the incoming VM point and the PC, type of cables used to connect each together) and which VM package you're on.How do I add a signature?0 -

Oh, it's got a D-link as well. I'm using my laptop upstairs at the mo and all the broadband thingies are downstairs.
I'm going to phone VM and get them to send me their uptodate wireless stuff. It's on my 'todo list'.:j I hope my comment helps :T0 -

The D-link will be the router which, as you're connecting with a laptop, suggests it does have wireless. Therefore, when your new PC arrives you can connect it to the network wirelessly.
Depending on the package you're on, you can request an upgrade to the VM Superhub from your online VM account. How do I add a signature?0
