Car Insurance help needed

Hi
I haven't driven for 5 and a half years since I was banned for one moronic charge of drink driving. I Have a new license but no no claims bonus. I've passed my 25 th birthday as well. I'm looking to get an idea of how much it will cost me to get insured on an (insurance) group 16 car. Any got any clues? Thanks

  • Get a quote from a comparison site?
  • I was wondering if anyone knew of any specialist brokers in this area? thanks
  • Your conviction would normally be rehabilitated (and so not discloseable) once the ban is over.

Are there other factors at play? Like prison sentence etc? If not then the comparison sites should be fine for you.

The brokers on the side road off the high street. I think thats the closest in your area.

Group 16 car means very little when it comes to premiums. A Ford Galaxy and a Ford KA both come under insurance group 16. Depending on the exact model. And so can a vauxhall Corsa. But depending on the area you live the Corsa may cost a lot more to insure then the other group 16 cars.

Depends how many claims the company your using have had for that car in that area.

New licence, Zero no claims and a DD conviction to declare. Its going to be eye wateringly expensive.

See the 17 year olds moaning about having to pay over £4000 to insure a £500 car. You might think their quotes are cheap.

Beware Hugo's post about it being spent... Depends on the insurance wording...

Conviction spent, BUT its still on your licence for 11 years? And some may ask that specifically.

No Prison sentence, just a 3 year ban, 2 years probation and a rehabilitation course learning about how many units of alcohol in each drink etc..

Since the conviction is 'spent' as they call it 5 years having past, do I really not legally have to disclose it when applying on a price comparison site? thanks

They can ask what they want, there is no obligation to declare a truely spent conviction.

Depends on the terms of the insurer, some will ask for all convictions with the last 3 years, some may ask for a 5 year timespan. If the conviction date is outside of the guidelines that the insurance company work on, then you wouldn't have to disclose it.
I work for a leading insurance company as an Insurance Advisor dealing with Commercial Insurance. Feel free to ask me any questions but please do not take what I say as correct advice at all times, as every insurance company works differently to others.

I have seen wordings asking if you have ever been disqualified.

For this type of conviction I would not try purchasing over the internet - I would see a specialist broker and go for the lowest group car you can possibly find.

Remember that there will also be other factors taken into account - postcode, other drivers, circumstances of conviction e.g. was there an accident etc.

Why have you got a new licence - did your old one expire or was this a requirement?

I am sure somebody will come along with specialist brokers.
