Are potatoe ricers worth the money?

  • I love mine although it is a bit of a pain to clean. I use a nailbrush and find that is the easiest way. Mine isn't dishwasher proof but I think most of them are now.
  • Wouldn't be without mine.....

Yes! We kept getting lumpy mash even with an electric whisk (the way my mum did it) so when I saw one in the local "sells everything cheap" shop I thought it was worth a try. It was only £8 and came with a set of interchangable discs so you could change how thick it 'riced' it. Plus, as they remove, it's really easy to wash - the 'cup' part pops out, as do the discs, so all shoved in the sink and easily washed with a sponge.

I don't find the potato goes cold if you do it straight away, though we tend to batch-cook mash potato and freeze so it's not really a big deal. Like someone else said, a quick ding in the microwave and it's warm again anyway!

I love mine. If you've got kids or adults that don't like cauli or any veg for that matter, put it through the ricer with your spuds to disguise it.

Another one for the love it pile :rotfl:, absolutely adore mine and wouldn't be without it, makes the smoothest mash ever and you don't always need to add butter or milk (depending on variety of spud used) so helps OH with his weight loss.

Yes, I've found if I just 'rice' it straight on to the plate it looks like there is loads - but it's all air

Well mine just sits in the drawer. I've probably used it half a dozen times. It's a faff to wash up and takes longer than using a masher, so I usually just reach for the masher. There was one time when OH tried to use it for swede and ended up in a right mess, he has never used it since! It is just a standard ricer from Ikea, maybe I should have paid more for a better one?
  • I agree about it being a faff to use, then to clean however they do make a lovely smooth mash. I have started using my electric hand whisk to mash potatoes and have found this way even smoother and all I have to wash are two blades. This is St Delia's way which I was always dubious about but they always turn out great :)

Those that say it's a faff to clean, are your units all one piece? I could see it being awkward that way, so do appreciate that mine comes apart!
