New Ideal boiler losing pressure & bleeding rads

We decided to change our 25 year back boiler for a combi boiler as we were having a loft conversion. The old heating system cam out and a new combi boiler fitted in October.

Since then we have to bleed our rads every 3-4 days and the boiler keep losing pressure.

We understand that bleeding the rads you have to repressurize the system - but why?

I've search the web and suggest either a leak or PVR is leaking. We did note that the discharge pipe which we had to put in a bucket because it keep freezing was filling up with a lot of water - but where to start. (has since been relocated so we could access)

Should I call Ideal out to check the boiler, or BG to check the rads?

how do I check which part of the system is failing?

Thanks for any suggestions.
I'll worry about tomorrow when it happens

Get your RGI back to correct the problem-it's under warranty. Why have you waited 4 months if the fault has been there from the start?
If you let air out of the system, water fills that airspace and you must put more water in to maintain pressure.
By 'discharge pipe', do you mean the condensate pipe? That should not freeze up if properly installed and lagged, and it is supposed to discharge constantly when the boiler is in condensing mode. The overflow pipe from the PRV is entirely separate to that.
It could be the PRV, the EV, or a leak on the CH circuit, check for discharge from the PRV first.

Sounds like a sticky prv. Give it a twist to reseat it, it may just have a slow weep on it.

Why are you bleeding the rads?
  • Thanks for your help.

Have had the loft installers back several times but they don't seem to be able to fix the problem.

We keep bleeding the rads because the loft ones are cold at the top and warm at the bottom.

And yes I meant the discharge pipe it wasn't insulated properly so we got them to relocate it just in case it froze again. What surprised us was the amount of water that discharges from it.

We also thought it might be to with our Mira shower as those pipes keep banging away when to shower is one.

I will ring Ideal in the morning and see if they can come out.

    Thanks for your help.

  • why are you getting the loft installers back ? you need the RGI that fitted it

if you get Ideal out & it's an installer fault then they will charge you for the visit
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

As above. What has it got to do with the loft conversion people?

  • Sounds a bodge. Did you receive a Building Regs compliance certificate for the boiler? Has the warranty been registered with Ideal? A job for the 'RGI' who installed the Ideal:eek:

Assuming it is an Ideal Logic or Logic plus, it could be the heat exchanger failed.

Getting lots of these reported these days.

I have fitted about 150 ideal logics and have never had one faulty one.
There was an issue with the heat exchangers on the early models about 3 years ago.

Could it just be the expansion vessel isn't big enough for the system?
The water is getting sent out the PRV because of that....

We had that problem at my mothers house when she had a new boiler fitted, the Gas Safe registered fitter didn't have a clue what was happening, it was only because I watched the boiler for a couple of hours that I noticed the pressure increase. Fitted an extra vessel and problem solved.
