Sheilas Wheels Car Insurance

Has anyone else had problems with CANCELLING SHEILAS WHEELS CAR INSURANCE. My vehicle was hit whilst parked at the end of 2011 on renewal my premium had increased by approx £70 even though I have protected no claims. This year when my renewal came it had gone up by another £100. I found a better deal with LV. When I contacted Sheilas Wheels they said I had cancelled 4 days after the 14 days to cancel and would be charged a cancellation fee of £27.50. Then received a letter demanding £100.84 for the period 21 Jan - 9 Feb!! or they will pass it on to a 3rd party for recovery. They say charges for legal services, car hire, no claims protection are non refundable and I have to pay for the year even though I can't use these services!! I think the sum is extortionate and would like to make others aware of this disproportionate amount which they charge. Any comments on what I can do next please???

It's about time the non refunding of add-ons like legal, car hire etc was run by the FOS.

I'd suggest writing a complaint letter telling them that whilst you accept you are liable for pro rata time on cover plus a reasonable cancellation charge you feel you have been treated unfairly on the non refunding of the add-ons and would like a final response letter so you can refer to the FOS.

I'll bet a tenner they back down
  • Did you have the "add ons" like legal cover, car hire etc when you took out the policy with them originally, or had they stuck these in at renewal by default?

Perfectly normal, Charge for time on cover, Which some insurers charge at a higher rate.

Plus a cancellation fee etc. Whether inside or outside the 14 days they can still charge all this. I presume they have terms that allow you to cancel cheaply inside the 14 days?

But as vaio says. Why do you pay for legal protection for a full year. As you have paid them can you still use this service for the next 12 months?

    All rather one sided.

  • To my knowledge inside 14 days won't change the cancellation fee but my experience is that inside 14 days they do refund optional extras as these come with a Cool-Off period.
I work for a leading insurance company as an Insurance Advisor dealing with Commercial Insurance. Feel free to ask me any questions but please do not take what I say as correct advice at all times, as every insurance company works differently to others.

We will never renew with this company. They cancelled the policy 2 days after they admitted receiving proof of no claims, charged £90 to reinstate even though they had admitted they had the proof, claimed arrived too late (It was Xmas and their paperwork had arrived 10 days after policy was started) They have just tried to charge £190 extra to add a driver and swap to another equivalent car. Admin charges fine but to charge so much for 8 months remaining means first year costs of almost £600 when 8 insurers would do a year for under £240!

Adding a young driver and a new car? They probably assumed the young driver is going to be the main driver and quoted on their risk not the original main driver.
