But not all of that half will be drain either.

The government aren't creating anything. People live, a civilised society provides. Those same people were taxed through out their working life to provide for other people. That was the contract they had with society imposed upon by the governments of the day. All that is happening is that policy is being rolled forward. Government shortsightedness has driven us up this creek.

Once again, people didn't pay enough, or we wouldn't have a trillion pound debt and a 120 billion deficit, much of which goes on life preservation for those of significant years.

Labour deserves to be criticised for its failures, but too many people forget just how bad the NHS was after 18 years of Tory mis-management. In 1997 waiting lists were horrendous, staff shortages considerable, clinical outcomes apalling and our hospitals were crumbling.

The Kings Fund report in 2010 reviewed Labour's performance and included several sections on the state of the NHS in 1997.

    http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/sites/files/kf/high-performing-nhs-progress-review-1997-2010-ruth-thorlby-jo-maybin-kings-fund-april-2010_0.pdf

People forget that Blair was elected to address these problems and did make considerable progress to improve the situation.

So when you say will Labour apologise for their mismanagement of the NHS, I say who ever apologised for the mess that Thacther and Major left?
I like a post that cuts through all the right wing rhetoric that conveniently forgets recent history. As with other huge institutions the NHS is always open to criticism based on the pre-conceived prejudices of the critic........it was so pleasurable watching the lily livered weak smiles through gritted teeth of tory types having to say how good the opening ceremony of the Olympics was. They were caught in a dilemma of having to praise the celebration of the NHS and diversity or otherwise get harangued for dissing their own country....it was priceless:rotfl:

Shame it was all a charade. Would have been more realistic with starving patients being sat in faeces stained bed sheets really wouldn't it, with no one answering their buzzer.

Would have been better with a few fat cat managers rubbing their hands in glee at 120k+ salaries whilst ignoring systemic failures that were killing their patients.

Quote people paid enough for the then offering.

The fact that governements have seen fit to squander those investments isn't the fault of the contributors.

    What, on education? infrastructure investment?

What else have they squandered it on? The NHS was never supposed to be the size or scope it has now reached.

No and neither was sorting out failed cosmetic, elective private sector surgery either.

Paying for four more years of war in Afghanistan by cutting £20bn from hospitals.

What a sickening aspect of this 11 year war that it has been accompanied not just by a rise in killing but a rise in austerity in all of the warmongering countries.

The UK not working effectively is the problem.

Because of high taxation to pay for sociallist schemes like the NHS and large state pension.

If more people worked, meaningfully, and fully contributed, taxation individually or at corporate level wouldn't need to be so high.

The most you can currently get is £107.45 per week.

Massive that. For a minimum of 40 years of contribution. Would barely fill up the average saloon car.
