generally this is because but not always some buildings like ours is a grade 2 listed building so thats the reason in our case for a communal only system.0 -

We watch a mix of Sky and Freeview (TV has it built in). So if programmes clash we'll record one on Sky+ and watch the other on Freeview (if available). If both channels are specific to Sky then we either have to sacrifice one, or find a +1 channel.
If there's no other option then we record one on Sky and use catch up TV at a later date to watch the other.
It's by no means ideal, but it works.
see above posts gordon, when i spoke with the company supporting our communal system all the aerial feeds have a satellite signal piggybacked off of it but they tested it just to make sure. obviously this is assuming you have a point in another room! mine was in the bedroom which just had no sat point on the faceplate. to split the signal off it just needs the faceplate changing from just aerial to sat and aerial. it still just has ONE cable going into the back of it. either get in touch with your communal system installer to have it checked out or risk going to an electrical wholesaler buy a faceplate for aroung a fiver stick it in, move the sat box temporerily into the bedroom plug in see if works. if it does buy nice long length of cable and 'plumb' it in or pay for the work to be done? and voila!!!0 -
Although you have a communial dish that is no reason for a dish of your own not being installed unless the engineer physically cant get up to your level (balcony is an option facing se)or the building management wont allow it. Its just a lovely job for the engineer when its communial feed.

Thanks for this, I might give this option a try as for the sake of a fiver there's not alot to lose!0 -
I have a communal dish, and its a little annoying yeah! But id never cancel. The main reason i have Sky is for Sky Sports. The + part is just a nice addition.0

It doesn't have to be a listed building for the management co. not to want a separate minidish stuck onto every flat in the block. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
