HMRC deal with lots of different taxes, income tax even has a different system for those who fill in annual tax returns, maybe it's different for different taxes?
What were you claiming FOREVER21?0 -
Claiming overpayment of income tax on savings after reading mse article, I think some of the tax should have been at the 10% rate I hope!!0

I think you have misread that form, there is no mention of bacs on it and section 11 starts 'If you would like the payable order to go to your bank'
Quick google check shows payable order is government speak for a cheque.
Maybe agrinnall has the answer- self assessment refunds can go by bacs but others can't?0 -
Dazed might well be right, perhaps SA refunds are processed automatically and the payment gets generated by the system, whereas other refunds may need a degree of human intervention so payment is made by cheque.0
