HMRC Remit not clearing?

Just wondered if anyone else had this happen to them when HMRC did a tax refund by direct transfer to their current bank account.
We have the full refund as showing up as cleared on arrival - but then the account balance drops by £595 and shows according to Barclays that it will clear 3 working days later - in effect Tuesday. Have never known any gov't payment not clear straight away. CS rep at the bank said that she had never seen it either.
So has this happened to others - all other money I get from DWP clears on the day no problem.

They've posted a cheque to your bank.
No more complex than that.0 -
Did HMRC have your bank details so they could make a bank transfer or as Opinions has said did they send a cheque to your bank ?Horseunderwater wrote: »Just wondered if anyone else had this happen to them when HMRC did a tax refund by direct transfer to their current bank account.

Surely if it was a cheque it would show as being a cheque remittence?
But you could be right - it makes a weird kind of sense. I was sure that I had given them bank and sort code details so that they could do a Bacs deposit. Oh well not to worry.0 -
I must say, I thought HMRC always posted a cheque direct to the bank branch. Very 19th century, but it is the government after all.0

That tells the bank who the cheque belongs too.0 -
Posting a cheque direct to your bank? I've never heard of this.
Any tax refunds I've had have either been paid by cheque to my home address, or a direct BACS payment.0 -
Mine gets sent as a cheque to my branch.0

Just completed HMRC application form for a refund they give 3 options
1 BACS payment
2Cheque direct to your bank
3 Cheque direct to you.
:j As long as I get the money any option will do but I have gone for 1 as I hope this will be the quickest.0 -
Is there some reason why HMRC do this in some cases and not others? Every refund from SA that I've had has gone directly into my account, and any other refunds have been by cheque to my home address, I've never experienced the HMRC cheque to the branch method.
Edit: posted as FOREVER21 was providing at least one explanation!0
