I would like to know about turnips, are they easy to grow and is there any one variety that you'd recommend?
Also likewise cauliflower, how easy are they?

Somethings nibbled all the leaves off my cauli's.

I threw a few turnip seeds down and got some. Something seemed to like them also. Had fairly large holes in them.

  • Nah - turnips are horrid. Ditch them and try Kohl Rabi instead - infinitely better crop.

Caulis - I've only ever managed to get one to head up. Waste of time.

Caulis - no idea... but my parents used to grow them and I have many memories as a child that every time you pick a cauli you have to fill the washing up bowl with salt water and cut up the cauli and lob it in there for some time.... so the caterpillars die off and float to the top :)

I've just bought some Cauli seeds aswell! :rotfl:

I'll keep them covered with netting once they go in the ground and see if that stops pests getting to them. Or a cloche!
  • love it how me all can't do cauli's i gave up a few years ago, on't bother with cabbage either mostly because i can't eat it though. Turnips sorry but yuk

A vote for turnips , but harvest when very small , any bigger than a tennis ball is a waste.

I had good success with swede so that might be a good compromise?
