Approx 4 weeks ago we rescued a Yorkshire terrier.:j He was about to be euthanized due to the fact he had been adopted 3 - 4 previous times and each time he was taken back it was either because the new owners felt he was aggressive or he was a persistent barker.
He hasn't been treated very well by at least one of the previous owners so hasn't had the best start in life.
We have managed to stop any aggressiveness and persistent barking by using commands and treats, brilliant.
Now to get to the point
The problem is house training him. Now we were told he was 10 months old when we got him but he still seems to be teething so we are wondering if he is a little younger.
When he is let outside to pee he runs up and down whimpering, only occasionally will he circle, sniff and pee or poop, more often than not he will continue to run up and down come in wait 5 mins and do it in the house.
We praise him and give him a treat when he does it outside but say nothing when he does it inside, just let him out and clean it up.
Does anyone have any ideas we can use please?
If anyone wants to see what he looks like he has his own facebook page which my Daughter in law made for him

Its in English and Thai and he is a large Yorkshire terrier.:o
We were very lucky to get him as my niece is a vet and she knew we wanted a dog so phoned us up and asked if we wanted him, We said yes immediately:). There is no way this dog is going back to the rescue center, hes loving, he is such a character, he is actually quite intelligent and hes a happy little dog who loves his cuddles.:) We need some ideas on training him.

I'm no expert, but I'd recommend going into the garden with him, until he performs (with praise) and also gets used to the words wee and poo or whatever you use.
It seems as if he comes back in and does it, as he wants to perform in front of you, possibly to get praise.0 -
Sounds like you're doing the right thing in praising him for going out and not overreacting when he goes inside.
My last rescue dog took a lot of house training, so it's very early days yet for you - maybe he's had bad experiences with going outside and it worries him for some reason? Either that or he absolutely no idea what he's out there for.
Instead of letting him out into the garden for the necessary, I'd try taking him out for a short walk and not returning home until he's done something. With mutt I started off taking her out every half an hour, then over time built up so she could be left for hours.
It'a nuisance to start with, but mutt got the gist after a while.
And well done for taking him on - sounds like he's well and truly landed on his feet. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
He is absolutely gorgeous! So glad he has such a happy lofe with you and can now experience being loved rather than being passed from pillar to post.
I think praise for business done outside is the thing to continue with. I know it can be frustrating until they get the hang of it.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

He is absolutly gorgeous, I agree to the when he goes into the garden follow him and ask he if he wants a wee or a poo (just warn the neighbours you haven't lost your marbles!!), I'm sure he'll get the hang of it.
If he hasn't been trained then he may not really realise what outside for.
Good luck and take care xxxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
As you have had him 4 weeks , you should be sussing out roughly when he needs to go.....Take him out into garden or better a walk(as he seems to have been chipped out previously into garden to do his toilet), and stay there until he does his business , as he is doing it say a command,we use " pee pee" and the dog learns to do it on command.
The command works wonders and in the snow/rain we can get our dog to do its toilets within seconds, rather than sniff for ages.0 -
heres a few ideas...
- get into a routine so he knows what is going to happen throughout the day and take comfort from this
- try DAP diffuser, this worked wonders with my last rescue dog, it releases the scent of a lactating b!tch and makes the dog feel safe (can get them online) its like a plug in air freshener but humans cant smell it.
- you are doing the right thing praising good behaviour and ignoring bad
- try a crate? My dog now is also a rescue and I had never tried crates before as I didnt think it seemed right somehow but when I looked into it was the right thing. Dogs like to feel safe and having a crated environment (I put a blanket over it so its like a cave!) is what wolves have in the wild...ish!
Lastly, a huge well done for taking this little fella on. There are so many sad stories out there oof people dumping old dogs with health problems...sign of the times I suppose. It will take time but will be worth it.
Good luck and keep us posted

everyone is giving great advice, i agree with go in the garden with him. The defusers are amazing - but why not ask your neice? or contact the yorkie rescue centre for advice? .... im affraid it maybe patience and tolerance. we rescued 2 cavilers at 12 yrs old who werent house trained:eek: and 1 was deaf ... but patience prevailed xxx good luckww: -2.5, -4.5 lb0

Id start putting him in the lead when you take him into the garden, that way there will be no running about and you will know when he has done whatever he needs to. Yes its a pain especially in cold weather, but stay for 10 mins and then try half an hour later. As soon as he has "gone" then lots of praise and try adding a command and lots of fuss.
He is a adorable!
Good luck

Well done for taking on the little man, he looks gorgeous

The suggestions above are all great.
You say he has been a couple of times in the garden? I would try remembering which spot he goes in and take him out on his lead to that spot and then use your command.
My new boy for some reason has certain spots for certain functions in the garden!
It could be that once he knows what a certain area is 'for' then he will go more happily. When he has settled a bit more he will then likely start going other places too.
Also clean up with biological washing powder rather than bleach to remove the odour of where he has been in the house.0 -
Good luck with him, those photos are great
