Car charger draining phone battery?

I recently purchased a car charger for my mobile, used it today for about 5 minutes and it drained my battery from 20% to 8%!

The same thing happened with my USB charger and phone cable a couple of weeks ago, which is why I bought a proper phone charger as I assumed the USB was faulty.

The socket in the car is fine, as I use that for my satnav and ipod dock and neither has ever died on me. The phone cable itself is fine as the phone charges when it's in the wall, therefore the phone must be fine too. It's just odd that 2 separate chargers bought from different sources have done the same thing and drained my battery.

I wanted the charger so I could charge my phone while on the move (obviously!) and also use my phone as a backup satnav - my tomtom is getting old and new roads are being built all the time - not that I go to new places much but you never know! :rotfl:

The phone is a Huawei G300, and as stated it has never had any problem charging when plugged in to the wall.

Has anyone else had the same problem, and any ideas why it might be happening/which component it could be?

A couple of things to bear in mind

Sometimes it takes a bit of jiggling about with some car chargers to make a decent contact in the socket ...mine has a light on it which lights up when a good contact is made so you know it's charging

The other thing is using a phone for sat nav uses alot of power with screen speakers and gps data going on at the same time and some chargers don't put enough juice through and you still end up in a negative situation so depends on the output of the charger

If your car battery was only at 20% to start with and is more than 2 years old, then what you experienced is normal and indicates the car artery is coming to the end of its useful life. I got stranded after running my iPhone on charge for just 1 hour!

Were you using the phone at the time? You often find that many car chargers simply can't supply enough current to charge the phone, and only slow the drain down a bit.

    I agree with that

I use my mobile allllll the time as Sat Nav in my car

before I bought a car charger I read a lot of articles saying they simply could not charge fast enough for Sat Nav (maybe gobbles a lot of juice) - so bought a charger specifically recommended by many buyers as being 'up to the job' and mine is fine

the fact that you bought 2 that wont charge doesn't suprise me as I came away with the conclusion that the vast majority of chargers were simply NOT up to it
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

The OP has a G300 and you recommended this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002HMZGZS/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00 in the long thread on the Huawai G300.
Perhaps it might be worth their while risking £2.49 to see if that helps?

    Hi,

Yes, the charging light came on immediately as I plugged the phone in. Mine flashed red when the battery is very low, orange when it is charging and green when done. It was orange, and I couldn't believe it when it went to red!

Was not using the phone as a sat nav at the time, it was just on a charge so I could test the new charger.

Hi. No, I plugged it in, the charging light came on and I turned the screen off. I then drove for no more than 5 minutes and happened to notice the charging light had gone from orange to red, typically it goes red when battery is very low so I checked the charge on it and it had dropped 12%.

I take it you mean the light on the phone ?

My charger has a light on the plug that goes in the car socket that comes on when it makes a good contact in the socket so you know it's working.
